India, Japan ink mutual military logistics agreement

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) After years of negotiations, India and Japan have inked a landmark agreement that will allow their militaries to access each other's bases for logistics support, a key development that comes in the backdrop of growing concerns over China's military muscle flexing in the region.

The acquisition and cross-servicing pact was signed by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Japanese Ambassador Suzuki Satoshi, a defence ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

India: AMU to bury time capsule recounting varsity history

Aligarh, Sep 10 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University will bury a time capsule recounting the institution's history during its centenary celebrations in December.

According to AMU spokesperson Shafay Kidwai, the celebrations were earlier scheduled to span several weeks, for which a number of dignitaries from India and abroad were invited.

But now, the either the date of the function can be pushed or a modified and truncated programme may be held, he said referring to the coronavirus situation, which according to him is still fluid.

India: Patients can not be turned away from hospitals: Bombay HC

Nagpur, Sep 10 (PTI) Taking suo moto (on its own) notice of problems faced by patients at hospitals in the district amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday said an ailing person can not be turned away from hospitals because of shortage of beds or staff.

A division bench of Justices Ravi Deshpande and Pushpa Ganediwala said the main issue which required the court's attention is making ventilators and beds available to patients so as to reduce the death rate.

India: UP minister tests positive for COVID-19

Lucknow Sep 11 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Jails, Jai Kumar Singh Jaiki, said on Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

The minister is in home isolation.

"After detecting primary symptoms of corona, I had got my test done on September 9 which has come positive. As per medical advice, I have isolated myself at home," he said in a tweet.

In another tweet, he requested all those who had come in contact with him in the past one week to isolate themselves and get tested.

India: record 96,551COVID infections in a day, total cases reach 4,555,555 mark

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) India's COVID-19 caseload sprinted past 45 lakh and the death toll climbed to 76,271 with a record 96,551 infections and 1,209 fatalities being reported in a day, while the recoveries crossed 35 lakh on Friday, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 45,62,414, while the recoveries surged to 35,42,663, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate has further dropped to 1.67 per cent while the recovery rate was recorded at 77.65 per cent.

India, China agree to disengage thousands of border troops

NEW DELHI (AP) — The Indian and Chinese foreign ministers have agreed that their troops should disengage from a tense border standoff, maintain proper distance and ease tensions in the cold-desert Ladakh region where the two sides in June had their deadliest clash in decades.

India’s S. Jaishankar and China’s Wang Yi met in the Russian capital on Thursday night and concurred that “the current situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side,” according to a joint statement issued Friday.

Kanpur: As Anwarganj railway station will again share some of the passengers on its platform, the deputy CTM HS Upadhaya in his recent inspection directs his accountable subordinates to improve the condition of the station by Saturday.

Whatever deficiencies he found during his inspection on Wednesday he instructed the officials concerned to remove within two days.

India: Why should TV news not be regulated by govt, asks HC

Mumbai, Sep 10 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Thursday said it was surprised to know that the government had no control over the electronic media and asked why television news should not be regulated by the state.

The observation was made by a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni while hearing a bunch of petitions that sought various reliefs related to the case of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, including a direction to restrain the press in its coverage of the case.
