Chinese medical team imparts TCM knowledge to Namibian university students

WINDHOEK, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese medical team in Namibia on Monday delivered a lecture on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to students from the University of Namibia, enabling them to have a better understanding of the TCM techniques.

During the lecture at the university's Confucius Institute, the Chinese doctors delved into the intricate details of TCM, in a move meant to enlighten and educate students more on the benefits as an alternative to other modern forms of treatments.

Namibia's flooded region appeals for aid

WINDHOEK, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- One of the most flooded regions in northern Namibia is appealing for help after the death of four people in the past two weeks.

The Oshana region, home to more than 170,000 people, together with another affected region - Ohangwena - had by Feb. 6 relocated more than 600 people after floods destroyed more than 49 homes and caused the closure of more than 30 schools, leaving about 20,000 pupils stranded.

Namibia reports outbreak of foot and mouth disease

WINDHOEK, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has been hit by another outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the Zambezi region, which is located in the extreme northeast of the country, agricultural officials said in an e-mailed statement Saturday.

The country's Chief Veterinary Officer Albertina Shilongo said the areas of Kabbe South and North constituencies have been declared FMD-infected areas, while the entire Zambezi region is declared a disease management area (DMA).

Namibia central bank revises 2022 growth forecast to 3.2 pct

WINDHOEK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's economy is expected to grow by 3.2 percent in 2022 and by 2.9 percent in 2023, according to the central bank's latest Economic Outlook for 2022.

"The estimated growth for 2022 represents a 0.2 percentage point downward revision from the February 2022 release (3.4 pct), however, it is an improvement from 2.4 percent registered in 2021," said Bank of Namibia Director of Strategic Communications and International Relations Kazembire Zemburuka earlier this week.

Namibia, South Korea to explore options for further development of esports

WINDHOEK, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Namibian Electronic Sports Association (NESA) and the Korea eSports Association (KeSPA) will be entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further the development of esports and international programs for esports athletes in both countries, an executive said Wednesday.

This will be Namibia's first entry into an agreement with a fellow esports association and is a monumental step in developing esports in Namibia, NESA spokesperson, Salome de Bruyn said in an announcement.

Namibia inaugurates 20 MW solar power plant

OMARURU, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Namibian state-owned utility, NamPower on Friday inaugurated the utility's first fully owned 20MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant at an event in Omaruru in the Erongo region.

The Omburu (means "white" in local language) PV project which took 15 months to complete, was constructed through a joint venture between Hopsol Africa and Tulive Private Equity.

The plant, which occupies 40 hectares, is expected to supply 67.8 GWh of clean energy annually, said NamPower.

Namibia suspends poultry imports from U.S. after bird flu outbreak

WINDHOEK, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has suspended imports of live poultry, birds and poultry products from the United States after outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, the Namibian Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform said in a statement on Wednesday.

Namibia's veterinary services said it has, with immediate effect, suspended the import and transit movement of live poultry, birds, raw poultry products, live ostriches and ostrich products from the U.S.

Namibian leader extends condolences to Zambia after passing of former president Banda

WINDHOEK, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Hage Geingob on Saturday sent condolences to the government and people of Zambia after the passing of their former leader Rupiah Banda.

Banda passed away at his home on Friday at the age of 85 after a short battle with colon cancer.

Namibia agrees to send 35-40 cheetahs to India

WINDHOEK, March 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Namibia has agreed to translocate 35-40 cheetahs to India over a period of five years.

The agreement was inked after an Indian delegation from the Union Environment Ministry and the Wildlife Institute of India visited Namibia on Feb 22.

“During our talks with Namibian officials, we asked for 35-40 cheetahs over a period of five years. They have agreed to that,” Yadvendradev Jhala, dean of WII, told the Times of India on Feb 26.
