Nobel laureate Yunus convicted in Bangladesh labour law case

DHAKA, Jan 1 (Reuters) - A court in Bangladesh on Monday sentenced Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to six months in prison for labour law violations, prosecutors said, for what he said was a crime he did not commit.

Yunus, 83, and his Grameen Bank won the 2006 peace prize for their work to lift millions out of poverty by granting tiny loans of under $100 to the rural poor of Bangladesh, pioneering a global movement now known as microcredit.

Bangladesh Gets Female Firefighters For First Time

DHAKA, Dec 9 (NNN-BSS) – For the first time in the history of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), 15 female firefighters have joined the force, local media reported.

Bangladeshi Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday welcomed the newly-appointed female firefighters at a ceremony in Dhaka, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

Those 15 women out of 2,707 applicants were selected as firefighters through preliminary screening, physical fitness, medical tests, written tests and oral examination.

Bangladesh To Build 120 More Cyclone Shelter Centres

DHAKA, Nov 26 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government has decided to construct 120 more cyclone shelter centres in 13 coastal districts, to safeguard communities facing disaster risks.

The cyclone shelter centres will be built between Jan next year and Dec, 2027, under a project taken up by the Department of Disaster Management, with full funds from the government, the Financial Express reported, yesterday.

Chinese-built railway inaugurated in Bangladesh to bolster connectivity, transportation infrastructure

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Dohazari to Cox's Bazar Railway, one of the priority development projects of Bangladesh, was inaugurated here on Saturday to bolster connectivity and transportation infrastructure in the South Asian country.

The 103.5-km railway, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was partly built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Railway Group Limited (CREC).

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen attended the inauguration ceremony.

China provides anti-dengue emergency supply to Bangladesh

DHAKA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A handover ceremony of China's anti-dengue emergency supply for Bangladesh was held here on Tuesday.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen handed over the supply to the Bangladeshi Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque at the ceremony, saying that China and Bangladesh are genuine friends who share weal and woe and close neighbors who always help each other.

Bangladesh has recorded a total of 1,895 deaths from dengue fever out of 283,593 cases this year as of Tuesday, Bangladeshi health department figures showed.

Death Toll Rises To 15 In Bangladesh Train Collision

DHAKA, Oct 24 (NNN-BSS) – At least 15 people were killed after two trains collided, in Bangladesh’s Kishoreganj district, some 117 km north-east of Dhaka, yesterday, the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Md Mostak Sarker, said.

The official said, a container train, heading towards seaport city Chattogram, collided with Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Express, at around 3:30 p.m. local time yesterday.

Bangladesh To Import 150 Million Eggs To Stabilise Market

DHAKA, Oct 9 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government has approved the import of another 50 million eggs, amid a huge public outcry, due to skyrocketing prices of eggs in the country.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce, gave approval to five firms to import the eggs. With the latest decision of the ministry announced yesterday, a total of 15 companies so far got approval to bring in 150 million eggs from abroad.

Bangladesh dengue death toll nears 1,100

DHAKA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from dengue fever in Bangladesh so far this year is nearing the 1,100 mark amid the worst outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Bangladeshi government Monday confirmed another 10 deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since January to 1,096.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, the deaths include 107 in October, 396 in September, 342 in August and 204 in July.

Chinese firm to build solar power plant in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese firm will build a solar power plant in Bangladesh, a Bangladeshi cabinet meeting approved the proposal on Wednesday.

The plant would be a joint venture with China's Fujian Yongfu Power Engineering Company Ltd. The joint venture will construct a 70 MW plant in the hilly southeastern Bandarban district at a cost of 24.86 billion taka.

Bangladesh's power generation capacity reportedly stands at 23,871 MW. Of the amount, 1,194 MW comes from renewable energy sources.

Bangladesh Suffers Worst Day Of Dengue With Record Number Of Deaths

DHAKA, Sept 21 (NNN-BSS) – Bangladesh suffered its worst day yet of the dengue this year, as deaths of the disease reached the previous record, yesterday.

Bangladesh reported 3,015 new dengue cases and 21 new deaths yesterday, taking the tally to 176,810 and the death toll to over 850, so far, this year, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, said.

Previously, on Sept 2, the DGHS reported the highest daily death toll with 21 fatalities.
