Bangladesh: Powerful Cyclone Mocha makes landfall in Myanmar, tearing off roofs and killing at least 3

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Thousands of people hunkered down Sunday in monasteries, pagodas and schools, seeking shelter from a powerful storm that slammed into the coast of Myanmar, tearing the roofs off buildings and killing at least three people.

The center of Cyclone Mocha made landfall Sunday afternoon in Myanmar’s Rakhine state near Sittwe township wind speeds up to 209 kilometers (130 miles) per hour, Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said.

Dhaka, May 14 (PTI) Super cyclone Mocha started hitting the coastlines of Bangladesh and Myanmar on Sunday after intensifying into the equivalent of a category-five storm.

The powerful cyclone is bringing heavy rain and winds of up to 195 kph, which could see dangerous flooding in areas around the Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh: Newly-elected President Sahabuddin receives first ceremonial salute at Bangabhaban

DHAKA, April 25 (NNN-BSS) — Newly-elected President Mohammed Sahabuddin received the first ceremonial salute at the south-western part of the Credential Ground of the Bangabhaban here Tuesday.

The Head of the State inspected his first Guard of Honour at Bangabhaban after taking oath. As the President attended his first office at night (Monday Night), no ceremonial guard of honour has taken place.

Subsequently, the programme was held Tuesday morning. Family members and Bangabhaban officials witnessed the ceremony at about 10.30am.

Bangladesh: Mohammad Shahabuddin takes oath as new president

Dhaka, Apr 24 (PTI) Veteran politician Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on Monday at a state ceremony attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet colleagues.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath to 73-year-old Shahabuddin at the historic Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Besides premier Hasina and family members of the new president, politicians, Supreme Court judges, and senior civil and military officials attended the event.

Bangladesh to welcome EU, UK observers in next general polls: PM

DHAKA, April 20 (NNN-BSS) — Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh would welcome observers from the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) in the upcoming general election.

“We will welcome observers from the European Union and the United Kingdom in the next general election,” she said when the outgoing UK High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Chatterton Dickson paid a farewell call on her at the latter’s official Ganabhaban residence here.

Chinese tech giant Huawei to upgrade Bangladeshi state-run cellphone operator's network

DHAKA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- China's telecommunication giant Huawei will upgrade Bangladeshi state-run cellphone operator Teletalk's network to ensure better coverage in rural areas and 5G readiness.

Huawei said it will facilitate Teletalk with new 4G sites, core network, IP network, charging and billing system modernization solution. In this connection, both sides signed an agreement on April 13 in Dhaka.

Massive fire guts popular shopping centre in Bangladesh's capital

Dhaka, Apr 15 (PTI) A massive pre-dawn fire gutted thousands of shops at a shopping centre here on Saturday, forcing the fire service to seek the help of the military, paramilitary as well as police to extinguish the blaze, the second such incident in Bangladesh's capital this month.

Massive Fire Broke Out In Market In Bangladesh Capital

DHAKA, Apr 4 (NNN-BSS) – A massive fire broke out in a market, at a residential neighbourhood of the old part of Bangladesh’s capital, this morning, with no death reported so far.

Brigadier General, Md Main Uddin, director general of the department of fire service and civil defence, said that, 41 fire engines were fighting the fire in one of the city’s largest Bangabazar markets.

The fire, spreading to at least six nearby markets, was sending thick black smoke into the air visible at least several kilometres away.
