Israel: President Rivlin plans to resign to run for prime minister post

08 Aug 2020; MEMO: Israeli President Reuven Rivlin is planning to resign in order to compete with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the prime minister position, Israeli newspaper Maariv revealed on Friday.

Quds Net News Agency reported that Maariv cited Israeli inside sources confirming this plan.

The sources noted that there is substantial hope that Rivlin would achieve an overwhelming majority against the Likud Party.

Palestinian child detainee in Israel prison infected with coronavirus

08 Aug 2020; MEMO: A Palestinian child prisoner in an Israeli jail has tested positive for coronavirus, according to Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCI-P).

The 15-year-old from Al-Jalazoun Refugee Camp in the West Bank city of Ramallah was detained less than two weeks ago and taken to Shikma Prison in Ashkelon, southern Israel, for interrogation, according to Iyad Misk, an attorney with the rights group.

Israel launches airstrikes at Gaza in response to incendiary balloons

JERUSALEM, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said on Thursday that it carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to the launch of balloons carrying incendiary devices from the Palestinian enclave.

An Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that a fighter jet and an aircraft struck an infrastructure in northern Gaza Strip used for "underground activities" by Hamas, the Islamist Palestinian movement that runs Gaza.

US sends world’s largest plane to Israel to pick up Iron Dome missile systems

04 Aug 2020; MEMO: The world’s largest plane landed in Tel Aviv airport yesterday, carrying a cargo of US military trucks to be loaded with an Israeli air defence system.

The massive Antonov An-225 carrying ‘OshKosh’ trucks were fitted with Iron Dome missile defence system batteries before leaving Israel.

The Unit for International Transport of the Directorate of Production and Procurement in the Israeli Ministry of Defence was involved in bringing the Antonov plane to Israel, the ministry announced.

Israel jets strike targets in Syria in retaliation for Golan Heights attack

Israel launched air strikes on Syrian military targets in southern Syria late yesterday, after thwarting an attack near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Reuters reported.

04 Aug 2020; MEMO: According to the state-run news agency Sana, Israeli helicopters fired rockets at Syrian army positions near Quneitra in the south but caused only material damage.

It also said air defences had gone into action near the Syrian capital.

Israeli Airstrikes Hit Syrian Army Targets

JERUSALEM/DAMASCUS, Aug 4 (NNN-XINHUA) – Israeli helicopters fired missiles on Syrian military positions, in the southern province of Quneitra, Monday, according to Israel’s military and Syrian state news agency SANA.

Israel’s military said, last night it carried out airstrikes against targets belonging to the Syrian army, saying, the attack was a response to “attempted attack” a day earlier.

The attack in southern Syria was carried out by Israeli fighter jets, attack helicopters and aircraft, according to a separate statement issued by the Israeli military.

Israeli PM says West Bank annexation "isn't off the table"

JERUSALEM, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that his plan to annex portions of the Israeli-occupied West Bank "isn't off the table" yet.

"The issue of West Bank annexation resides with Washington," he told a meeting of his right-wing Likud faction. "It is not yet off the table. The option still remains," he said.
