India: Money laundering case: Court sends Chhattisgarh businessman to 12-day ED custody

Raipur, Oct 29 (PTI) A special court Chhattisgarh's Raipur district on Saturday sent to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody businessman Suryakant Tiwari, a prime suspect in a money laundering case linked to the alleged extortion of money from mining transporters.

Three other alleged accused, including an IAS officer, arrested in the case are already in judicial custody.

India: Soren govt wins confidence vote amid walkout by BJP MLAs

Ranchi, Sept 5 (PTI) The Jharkhand Assembly on Monday passed the confidence motion tabled by Chief Minister Hemant Soren amid a walkout staged by BJP legislators.

As many as 48 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion in the 81-member Assembly.

Speaking during the one-day special session, Soren said the need for trust vote was felt as BJP was "attempting to destabilise democratically elected governments" in non-BJP ruled states, including Jharkhand.

India: PM Modi begins 12-km roadshow in Deogarh amid tight security

Deoghar, July 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday embarked on a 12-km roadshow in Jharkhand's Deoghar district amid tight security.

Enthusiasts, most of them in saffron attire, waited on both sides of the road as the PM's carcade made its way through the meandering roads of the district, with Modi waving at the crowd and greeting people with folded hands.

The entire roadshow route was seen decked up with banners and posters welcoming the PM.

India: 'The Kashmir Files' shows half truth: Chhattisgarh CM

Raipur, Mar 17 (PTI) Amid the ongoing debate over Hindi film "The Kashmir Files", which is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in 1990s, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has claimed the movie portrays half truth and only shows violence without conveying any message.

Baghel was talking to reporters late Wednesday night after watching the movie at a multiplex here along with his cabinet colleagues and other MLAs.

India: CRPF officer killed in Naxal encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Feb 12 (PTI) A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was killed during an exchange of fire with Maoists in Chhattisgarh's left-wing extremism affected Bijapur district on Saturday, officials said.

The incident took place at Timmapur-Putkel under Basaguda police station area of the district when a CRPF patrol comprising personnel from the 'F company' of its 168th battalion was out for a road opening and sanitising duty.

India: Naxal killed in encounter with police in Chhattisgarh

Narayanpur, Jan 24 (PTI) A Naxal was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Monday, a senior police official said.

The gunfight took place at around 1.30 am near a bridge in a forest, located about six km from Bharanda police station, when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a search operation, Narayanpur's Superintendent of Police Girija Shankar Jaiswal said.

After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Naxal and a muzzle loading gun were recovered from the spot, he said.

India: Naxal terrorist killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Jan 19 (PTI) A Naxal was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region on Wednesday evening, an official said, a day after four ultras were gunned down in separate gunfights in Sukma district and along the state's border with Telangana.

The fresh encounter took place in the forests on tri-junction of Sukma, Dantewada and Bastar districts, where a dreaded woman Naxal was gunned down by security forces on Tuesday.

India: Chhattisgarh court rejects bail plea of Kalicharan

Raipur, Jan 3 (PTI) A sessions court in Raipur in Chhattisgarh on Monday rejected the bail plea of self-styled religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj, who was arrested in connection with his alleged derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

The court of XII Additional District and Sessions Judge Raipur Vikram Pratap Chandra rejected Kalicharan Maharaj's bail, said Public Prosecutor K K Shukla.

India: CoBRA inspector hangs self in Chhattisgarh's Sukma

Raipur, Dec 31 (PTI) An inspector with the elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action allegedly committed suicide in Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, police said on Friday.

Inspector Valang, hailing from Nagaland, hanged himself in the toilet of Burkapal Camp of the CoBRA's 206A Company under Chintagufa police station limits at around 8:50pm on Thursday, said Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Sharma.
