Moldova denounces new Russian ban on fruit imports

CHISINAU, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Pro-European authorities in Moldova on Friday dismissed as groundless a ban imposed by Russia on imports of its fruit and vegetables, the latest display of deteriorating relations between Moscow and the ex-Soviet state.

Russia's farm goods oversight agency, Rosselkhoznadzor, said on Thursday it was reinstating restrictions last imposed in 2022. It cited "continuous, systematic observation of elements subject to quarantine" and said Moldovan authorities had taken no action to right the situation.

Pro-Europe party of Moldova's president wins local elections, sees setbacks in big cities

CHISINAU, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The party of Moldova's pro-European president came first in hundreds of weekend local elections but was unable to win mayoral seats in the biggest cities, including the capital Chisinau, according to preliminary results on Monday.

Sunday's elections to pick 12,000 local officials nationwide, including the mayor of Chisinau, were seen as a test of President Maia Sandu's pro-European course and took place amid allegations of Russian meddling, which Moscow denies.

Russian embassy in Moldova to suspend consular appointments

CHISINAU, July 30 (Reuters) - Russia's embassy in Moldova has announced it will temporarily stop providing appointments for consular matters in what Moldovan officials say is a situation linked to the order by the country's authorities to reduce staff.

A statement issued by the embassy late on Saturday said consular appointments would be suspended from Aug. 5 "for technical reasons."

Tajik man fatally shoots two officers at a Moldova airport after he was denied entry, officials say

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — A Tajikistan national who was denied entry into Moldova at its main international airport grabbed a guard’s weapon and fatally shot two security officers Friday, officials said. One traveler also was wounded.

The suspect was being escorted by officials at Chisinau International Airport when he “took the gun of a border guard” and opened fire, authorities said. The individual was then neutralized and handcuffed by special forces who intervened. All passengers were evacuated from the airport.

Half of Moldovans against joining NATO, poll reveals

CHISINAU, June 27. /TASS/: A little more than half of the residents of Moldova, whose constitution prescribes neutrality, are against the country joining NATO, according to a public opinion poll released Tuesday by WatchDog.MD, a nongovernmental organization close to the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity.

A representative sample of 1,121 respondents took part in the poll, which was conducted from June 10-19. The maximum margin of error, according to the authors, is 3%. Residents of Transnistria did not participate in the survey.
