Hundreds leave Dominican Republic ahead of Haiti border shutdown

SANTO DOMINGO/OUANAMINTHE, Haiti, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Haitians returned from the Dominican Republic on Thursday after the Dominican president announced an imminent total border shutdown amid a conflict over the construction of a water channel from a shared river.

The border is set to close from Friday at 6 a.m. (1000 GMT) and will last "as long as necessary," Dominican authorities said, with backing from their military and police forces, though talks with the Haitian government are set to continue.

The storm began to slowly spin away late Wednesday afternoon from the island of Hispaniola that the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti after dumping heavy rain for several hours.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dec 20 (NNN-TELESUR) — Dominican Republic’s Santo Domingo conservative organizations and police confronted anti-racism activists who claimed justice for George Floyd in a demonstration.

“Those nationalists came and threw themselves at us and the police, instead of taking the attitude of protecting us, what they did was to stop us,” said Reconocido (recognized) non-governmental organization leader Ana Maria Belique.

Dominican Republic's new president pledges to fight pandemic, corruption

SANTO DOMINGO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Luis Abinader, the Dominican Republic's new president, pledged on Sunday to strengthen healthcare amid the COVID-19 pandemic and fight corruption, during his first presidential speech.

"COVID-19 has exposed the country's serious institutional weakness ... this is an opportunity to overcome our structural deficiencies," he said after being sworn in.

The Dominican Republic has registered more than 85,000 cases of infection and 1,400 deaths from the disease, which has impacted tourism, one of the island's leading industries.
