India: COVID-19 vaccination now compulsory in Puducherry

Puducherry, Dec 5 (PTI) The Union Territory of Puducherry has made it mandatory for all persons to get the COVID-19 vaccine with an aim to achieve cent per cent coverage and said those skipping it would face penal action under law.

The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G.Sriramulu stated this in an order on Saturday night and said it woud come into immediate effect.

The government has invoked the provisions of the Puducherry Public Health Act 1973 to implement compulsory vaccination.

India: Free vaccination for all, says Congress manifesto

Puducherry, Mar 28 (PTI) Free COVID-19 vaccination for all; scrapping of NEET and the new education policy; Rs 1,000 as assistance for homemakers; re-opening of mills; and enhanced pension for martyrs' kin are some of the promises made by the Congress party in its poll manifesto.

The manifesto was released here on Sunday by former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily.

The manifesto promised free vaccination against COVID-19 the expenses of which would be borne by the government.

India: Puducherry Assembly Speaker quits on health grounds

Puducherry, Feb 28 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhu quit on Sunday citing health reasons even as his brother joined the BJP just over a month ahead of the elections in the union territory.

In the resignation letter to Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, a copy of which was made available to mediapersons here, Sivakolundhu, a Congress leader, said he quit as Speaker only on health grounds.

Later, he told P T I that hehanded over the letter of resignation addressed to the Lt Governor to the Assembly Secretary.

India: Cabinet approves President's Rule in Puducherry

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to impose President's Rule in Puducherry, days after a Congress-led government in the union territory lost power during a vote of confidence.

Announcing the Cabinet decision, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that the decision was taken as no party claimed to form a government in Puducherry following the resignation of the chief minister there.

India: Puducherry CM Narayanasamy loses confidence vote

Puducherry, Feb 22 (PTI) The Congress-led government in Puducherry on Monday lost the confidence vote sought by Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, in the face of its depleted strength of 11 against the opposition's 14 following resignation of ruling dispensation MLAs, including a DMK legislator.

Though Narayanasamy moved the motion seeking the confidence vote minutes after the Assembly met for a special one-day session, he and his ruling side MLAs later walked out before the motion was put for voting.

India: Kiran Bedi removed as Puducherry LG

New Delhi, Feb 16 (PTI) In a sudden development, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi was removed from her post on Tuesday night at a time when the union territory was witnessing a political crisis following the resignation of Congress MLAs from the V Narayanasamy government.

A brief communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman Ajay Kumar Singh said the President has directed that Bedi "shall cease to hold the office of the Lieutenant-Governor of Puducherry".

India: Former Minister A Elumalai succumbs to COVID-19

Puducherry August 12 (PTI) Former Local Administration Minister of Puducherry A Elumalai succumbed to COVID-19 in centrally administered JIPMER on Wednesday.

Elumalai (53) had tested positive for the infection and was admitted to JIPMER on Tuesday, Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar told PTI.

Elumalai is survived by wife and three sons.

He was Local Administration Minister in the Congress Ministry headed by the then Chief Minister N Rangasamy in 2001.

India: Rebel Congress legislator disqualified in Puducherry

Puducherry, Jul 10 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhuon Friday ordered disqualification of rebel Congress legislator N Dhanavelou under the provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

Secretary to Assembly Mounusamy told P T I that the Speaker issued the order disqualifying Dhanavelou as a member of the House invoking provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

Indian PM non-committal on helping states tide over fiscal woes: CM

Puducherry, May 12 (PTI) Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was non-committal on fiscal assistance to states despite them apprising him of the financial sufferings during a video conference.

Therefore, there was no other option for the Union Territory except to borrow from the Reserve Bank of India to tide over the current fiscal crisis, he told reporters here on Monday night after participating in the video conference of chief ministers with Modi.

India: Withdraw new provisions in NPR, Pondy CM tells Amit Shah

Puducherry, Mar 4 (PTI): Chief Minister of Puducherry V Narayanasamy on Wednesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to withdraw the new provisions in the National Population Register (NPR) 2020 as they were causing panic among the people.

In a letter to Shah, the Chief Minister said the population census should be as per the 2010 format and the additional provisions now included in the NPR should be withdrawn.
