Uruguay dismantles network that brought drugs by air into the country

MONTEIDEO, Dec 8 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — A network that transported cocaine by air from Argentina to Uruguay was dismantled in a joint operation by the two countries’ prosecutors’ offices, it was announced here.

Argentine pilots brought the drugs on flights with over 400 kilos of cargo, reported El Pais newspaper.

The drugs came from Peru and were then transported in trucks to Montevideo, with the purpose of sending them to Europe.

Record sales for Uruguay in an exceptional year for rice production

MONTEVIDEO, Oct 15 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — For the first time in many years Uruguayan rice farmers are not complaining about the cereal’s price or asking for some form of government support.

On the contrary the Association of Rice Farmers have admitted to have sold overseas all of this year-s crop an estimated 1,26 million tons out of a total harvest of 1.4 million tons. Uruguay usually consumes 10% of its rice production and the rest is exported.

Asylum requests, mostly Cubans, Venezuelans on the rise in Uruguay: UNHCR

MONTEVIDEO, May 22 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of asylum requests in Uruguay has increased to 16,000 from 13,113 in mid-2022, it was reported in Montevideo.

The Refugee Agency spoke of an increase in asylum applications and reinforced its work in the country to obtain solutions for refugees and migrants in support of the State and civil organizations, according to local media.

Uruguay: “Argentina extremely cheap,” says Uruguayan president

MONTEVIDEO, May 5 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou said his country has a problem with prices in Argentine being so low due to a favorable exchange rate that people cross the border to do their shopping.

“We have a problem with Argentina because prices are extremely cheap,” Lacalle pointed out. “We have some problems in this regard in terms of competitiveness. Everyone, depending on the economist you talk to, will tell you how high the dollar should be, but it is true that we have a mismatch in that sense,” Lacalle stressed.

Uruguay, Brazil agree to deepen fight against organized crime along the border

MONTEVIDEO, Aug 31 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Authorities from Uruguay and Brazil defense authorities have held bilateral meetings towards coordinating joint efforts along the border between the two countries to carry out operations against drug trafficking and organized crime in the area.

 Uruguay’s Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, explained that the encounters with officials from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul aimed at “sharing the problems both sides” have regarding these issues.

South American countries set to launch official 2030 World Cup bid

MONTEVIDEO, Aug 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Four South American countries on Tuesday launch an unprecedented joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup with the hope of bringing the global showpiece back to its first home.

Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile’s intention to bid has long been in the making.

More than three years ago they committed to create a local organizing committee to co-ordinate with South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL to plan their bid.

But it has taken until now for the “Juntos 2030” (Together 2030) bid to be made official.

Uruguay will seek to join Trans-Pacific Partnership: Pres Lacalle announces

MONTEVIDEO, July 27 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou Tuesday announced his administration would seek to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and that he will seek endorsement from all political parties.

“Uruguay is going to ask for accession. It is a decision that the member countries have to analyze and we will see how we negotiate it,” said Lacalle Pou during his Exporters’ Day celebration speech.

Uruguay begins Parliamentary debate to legalize euthanasia

MONTEVIDEO, May 6 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Uruguayan lawmakers have begun this week the debate to legalize euthanasia, despite opposition from the National Party of President Luis Lacalle Pou and the Catholic Church.

The Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide bill was first introduced in 2020, but no further action was taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Uruguay, Turkey agree to start talks on trade deal

MONTEVIDEO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The foreign ministers of Uruguay and Turkey agreed here on Saturday to begin negotiations toward a bilateral free trade agreement.

Uruguayan Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu "agreed on the need to strengthen bilateral trade ties through agreements that generate better market access conditions for exports" for both countries, Uruguay's foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.

Uruguayan hotels 70-90% full during Carnival weekend

MONTEVIDEO, March 4 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Occupancy at Uruguay’s hotels has been between 70 and 90% during the just ended Carnival weekend, which represented a recovery from a bad Summer season for the leisure industry.

Upon releasing the data, Tourism Minister Tabaré Viera said the new figures showed a “slow recovery.”

Uruguay’s Chamber of Tourism (Camtur) and the Uruguayan Hotel and Gastronomy Union (Sughu) also welcomed the four-day performance, although they also warned it was not enough to make up for a poor summer season.
