India: Over 1,500 obsolete, archaic acts to be repealed: Rijiju

Shillong, Oct 23 (PTI) The Centre will repeal more than 1,500 obsolete and archaic laws during the winter session of Parliament, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

Obsolete laws are impediments in the normal life of common people and do not have relevance in the present time, nor deserve to remain in the statute books, Rijiju told reporters here on Saturday.

India: Two arrested in Meghalaya with huge cache of explosives

Shillong, Feb 16 (PTI) Two persons were arrested in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday with a huge cache of explosives, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a vehicle was intercepted at Byrnihat police outpost area near the inter-state border with Assam around 5 am and the explosives were recovered, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad said.

Two persons allegedly involved in illegally transporting the explosive substances were arrested, he said.

India: New guidelines for people visiting Meghalaya due to Omicron variant

Shillong, Dec 8 (PTI) Meghalaya government has issued new guidelines making it mandatory for people entering the state to register with the government website and download the Arogya Setu App and the Behavioural Change Management App, an official said.

The new guidelines were issued after the Omicron variant of COVID-19 was detected in some states, the official said on Tuesday.

India: Top HNLC militant killed in encounter in Meghalaya

Shillong, Aug 13 (PTI) A dreaded militant, who had surrendered, was killed in an encounter with the police in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district in the early hours of Friday when his home was raided in connection with a series of blasts across the state recently, officials said.

Chesterfield Thangkhiew (54), the former general secretary of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), had surrendered before Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in 2018.

India: Eat more beef than chicken, mutton, fish: BJP Minister

Shillong, Jul 31 (PTI) BJP minister in the Meghalaya government Sanbor Shullai encouraged the people of the state to eat more beef than chicken, mutton and fish, dispelling the apprehension that his party was against it.

Shullai, a senior BJP leader who was sworn in as a cabinet minister last week, said everybody was free to eat whatever they want in a democratic country.

India: 1,525 kg of explosives, 6,000 detonators seized in Meghalaya

Shillong, Dec 4 (PTI) Six person were arrested in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district with a huge quantity of explosives and detonators, police said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off about possible movement of explosives, police conducted raids in the 4 Kilo area on Wednesday night, they said.

India: Satya Pal Malik sworn in as new Meghalaya Governor

Shillong, Aug 19 (PTI) Satya Pal Malik was on Wednesday sworn in as the 19th Governor of Meghalaya during a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here.

Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Justice Biswanath Somadder administered the oath of office and secrecy to Malik in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his cabinet colleagues.

Malik succeeded Tathagata Roy whose five-year tenure ended in May.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique on Tuesday said Malik, Governor of Goa, is transferred and appointed as Governor of Meghalaya.
