India: Expert committee submits report on Assam's legislative competence to end polygamy

Guwahati, Aug 6 (PTI) An expert committee formed by the Assam government to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy submitted its report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.

Sarma shared pictures of the committee handing over the report to him and the cover of the document on Twitter.

"Today, the expert committee formed to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy in Assam submitted its report.

India: AIUDF to support Yashwant Sinha in presidential election

Guwahati, Jul 17 (PTI) The All India United Democratic Front on Sunday announced that it will vote for Yashwant Sinha, the joint opposition nominee, in the presidential election.

AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam, however, said his party will support the opposition candidate in the July 18 presidential poll even though they were "sidelined" during Sinha's recent visit to Assam.

India: Assam flood - Death toll rises to 25, 6.5 lakh hit

Guwahati, May 24 (PTI) The flood situation in Assam has slightly abated even though the death toll rose to 25 as one more person died and over 6.5 lakh people remained affected by the deluge across 22 districts, an official bulletin said.

According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person in Silchar of Cachar district was lost to floodwaters.

With this, the total number of people losing their lives in this year's flood and landslides has gone up to 25 across the state, it said on Monday.

India: Professor arrested for emails criticizing BJP gov in Assam

Hailakandi (Assam), May 21 (PTI) An associate professor of a college in Assam's Hailakandi district was arrested Saturday for allegedly sending emails to officials criticising government policies and using unparliamentary words against the state chief minister, a police officer said.

Police had registered a suo moto case against the professor, leading to his arrest, he added.

India: Will oust corrupt BJP from Assam: Abhishek Banerjee

Guwahati, May 11 (PTI) TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that he will do "everything possible" to oust the corrupt BJP government from power in Assam.

Addressing Trinamool Congress workers for the first time in Assam at a programme here, the MP set a target of winning 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state out of 14 in 2024.

"Wherever the TMC has entered, it has fought till the last. We will fight to evict the BJP in two years... I won't budge until we win in this state.

India: Assam gets cow ambulance service

Dibrugarh (Assam), Apr 30 (PTI) An ambulance service for sick and injured cows was inaugurated in Assam's Dibrugarh district.

The service, to be run by Gopal Gaushala, was inaugurated by Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu on Friday.

The 'gaushala' or chow shelter had also set up a hospital for cows here in 2020.

India: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani granted bail

Kokrajhar (Assam), Apr 25 (PTI) Independent MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani was granted bail on Monday by a Kokrajhar Court in a case related to a tweet by him against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kokrajhar First Class Judicial Magistrate Bhavna Kakoty granted him bail with several conditions, details of which are awaited.

Mevani was taken back to the Kokrajhar Jail after the hearing, and his lawyers said they are working on the formalities related to the bail bond.

India: Special court frames charges against 67 in APSC 'cash for job' scam in Assam

Guwahati, Apr 19 (PTI) A special court here Tuesday framed charges against 67 accused persons, inclduing former APSC chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul in the 'cash for job' scam in Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).

Of the accused 60 are candidates who had appeared in the APSC exam and remaining seven are APSC members and staff.

Two of the accused - Sudeep Das and Rajib Paul were declared as absconders by the court.

India: 'Mysterious' giant sandstone jars found in Assam

New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI) Researchers have unearthed 65 giant "mysterious" jars in Assam that may have been used for ancient burial practices.

The sandstone jars uncovered by a team led by Tilok Thakuria, from North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya, and Uttam Bathari, from Gauhati University in Assam vary in shape and decoration.

Some of the jars are tall and cylindrical, while others are partly or fully buried in the ground, according to the study published in the Journal of Asian Archaeology.

India: 'Horse-trading' issue of MLAs rocks Assam Assembly

Guwahati, Mar 21 (PTI) The Opposition staged a walkout in the Assam Assembly on Monday over alleged horse trading of MLAs by the ruling BJP ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

As soon as the House assembled in the morning, the Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress said the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the ruling BJP were indulging in "undemocratic practices" by allegedly trying to "buy" MLAs to win both the Rajya Sabha seats from Assam for which elections will be held on March 31.
