India: Modi 'migratory bird' says Grand Alliance in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 22 (PTI) The Congress-led Grand Alliance in Assam on Monday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "migratory bird" who visits the state often but does not solve any problem.

The comment was made after Modi paid his third visit in a month to the poll-bound state and dedicated to the nation a number of projects in different parts of the state.

The Congress, which had posed six questions to the prime minister before his arrival, placed them again at a joint press conference with five alliance partners after he left.

India: AASU stages protests across Assam during PM's visit

Guwahati, Feb 22 (PTI) The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Monday staged protests across the state against the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded immediate implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord.

AASU members organised sit-ins at several places and waved black flags in dozens of towns across the state as Modi paid a visit to the poll-bound state for the third time in a month.

India: Assam man gets death for rape, murder of 5-year-old

Guwahati, Feb 10 (PTI) A court in Assam's Hojai district on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a 5-year-old girl last year.

Additional District and Sessions Judge N Senabai convicted Chandan Harijan of raping and murdering the minor girl under the IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the convict, which would be paid to the victims family as compensation.

Democratic space shrinking in India: Gaurav Gogoi

Guwahati, Feb 7 (PTI) Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Assam, Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday said people are being harassed by various agencies for criticising the government, leading to the shrinking of democratic space in the country.

Addressing a press conference here, Gogoi accused the Narendra Modi government of threatening all forms of democractic protests in the country and trying to silence peaceful dissent.

India: Huge quantity of arms and ammunition recovered in Assam

Kokrajhar (Assam), Jan 27 (PTI) A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered on Wednesday from Kokrajhar district, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, security personnel recovered the arms and ammunition from Lauti area near the India-Bhutan border, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Rakesh Raushan said.

A team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mukut Rabha, recovered 51 live ammunition of AK-47 series rifles, one AK-56 rifle, one AK-47 rifle, three AK magazines and one pistol along with a magazine.

India: Alarming rise of crime against women in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 18 (PTI) The Assam Mahila Congress on Monday expressed concern over the "alarming increase" of crime against women during the last few years under the present BJP government.

The state has reported "the highest rate of crime against women for the last three years consecutively" and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics reveal that it is constantly increasing, Assam Mahila Congress president and MLA Nandita Das told reporters here.

India: Kamtapur Liberation Organisation militant held from Assam

Kokrajhar, Jan 15 (PTI) A KLO militant was arrested from Assam's Kokrajhar district by a joint team of the Army and the police, defence sources said on Friday.

The Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) militant was apprehended at the Kalipukhuri village in Kokrajhar police station area on Thursday night, they said.

He has been identified as Pradip Roy alias Changma.

A 7.65 mm pistol with a magazine and six rounds of ammunition were seized from him.

India: HC rejects bail petition of Akhil Gogoi

Guwahati, Jan 7 (PTI) The Gauhati High Court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of Krishak Mukti Sangram Parishad (KMSS) and Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi in the case related to his alleged role in violent protests against Citizenship (Amendemnt) Act lodged by the NIA.

A division bench of the High Court comprising Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Ajit Bathakur rejected the bail petition of Akhil Gogoi.

Gogoi is lodged in Guwahati Central jail since his arrest in December 2019 for his alleged role in violent anti- Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

India: Anti-CAA protests begin in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 11 (PTI) Fresh agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was launched by 18 organisations in Assam on Friday demanding repeal of the legislation and release of jailed KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi who was taken into custody during the protests last year.

Protest rallies were taken out across the state by the organisations, including Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, Lachit Sena, besides students, and youth organisations of ethnic communities.

India: Former BJD MLA arrested in job scam

Bhubaneswar, Dec 3 (PTI) Barely four days after his expulsion from the ruling BJD on the charge of "anti-people" activities, Gopalpur MLA Pradip Panigrahi was on Thursday arrested for allegedly defrauding people promising them jobs, and sent to jail.

The Crime Branch sleuths picked up Panigrahi from his residence without any prior notice and took him to an undisclosed destination.

He was arrested after being interrogated in a fraud case relating to illegal collection of money from unemployed youths in Ganjam district, police said.
