India: Tarun Gogoi condemns arrest of activists Pinjra Tod activists in Delhi

Guwahati, May 25 (PTI) Veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on Monday condemned the arrest of two Pinjra Tod activists by Delhi Police for anti-CAA protests in the national capital and termed it as "political vendetta".

Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita were members of Pinjra Tod, a collective of women students and alumni of colleges across Delhi. They were arrested on Saturday in connection with a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Jaffrabad area in February.

India: African swine fever kills over 13,000 pigs in Assam

Guwahati, May 10 (PTI) The outbreak of African swine fever (AFS) has claimed more than 13,000 pigs in the last few days in parts of Assam, affecting the livelihood of hundreds of people involved in the animal husbandry in the state, an official said.

The infection has spread rapidly as the deaths have been reported from nine districts in Assam, he said.

India: More than 17,000 stranded people travel within Assam

Guwahati, Apr 25 (PTI) More than 17,000 people stranded in different parts of Assam travelled to their homes within the state by buses and personal vehicles on Saturday, the first day of the three-day movement allowed by the state government during the lockdown.

State Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary flagged off the buses carrying passengers from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) here to different districts.

Patowary said 300 buses plied on the first day from different districts, carrying over 5,000 stranded people.

India: Two DNLA terrorists killed by security forces in Assam

Diphu/ Guwahati, Apr 24 (PTI) Two cadres of Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) were killed in an encounter with security forces in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Friday, police said.

District Superintendent of Police Debajit Deori said based on specific information joint team of police and Army launched an operation at Dugudisa Reserve forest in Dhansiri area where the militants exchanged fire with the security forces.

India: Flight carrying PPEs from China lands in Guwahati

New Delhi, Apr 15 (PTI) A cargo flight carrying personal protective equipment (PPE) from Guangzhou city in China landed in Guwahati on Wednesday evening, officials said.

The PPEs have been procured from the neighbouring country for use by healthcare workers involved in the treatment of coronavirus-infected people.

India: Guwahati Bookfair put on hold due to Corona

Guwahati, Mar 8 (PTI) The 33rd Guwahati Bookfair, scheduled to be held later this month, has been put on hold indefinitely in the wake of the novel coronavirus outbreak, organisers said on Sunday.

The decision to postpone the event was taken in view of the Central government's advisory to avoid organising any event where a large number of people would be present, state- run Publication Board Assam said in a statement.

India: Assam lecturer arrested for derogatory post against PM

Silchar(Assam), Mar 4 (PTI) A Silchar court has granted bail to a guest lecturer at a local college, who was arrested for posting alleged derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS and the BJP on Facebook in wake of the violence in Delhi.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Silchar, on Tuesday granted bail to Souradeep Sengupta on a surety of Rs 15,000 and on the condition that he would cooperate with the police, and not leave the town without the court's permission.
