Russia embassy in Cyprus extends Consular services to Turkiye north

10 August 2023; MEMO: Russia's embassy in Cyprus is extending its Consulate to the Turkish-controlled north of the island in an effort to serve Russian citizens in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

According to the Russian news agency, TASS, an anonymous source from the Russian diplomatic mission in Cyprus stated that "We will begin providing Consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia in the near future. We will be working on a regular basis."

Polls open as Turkish Cypriots vote in local elections

26 Dec 2022; MEMO: Polls opened in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as residents began voting in Sunday's local elections.

A total of 208,236 registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in 768 ballot boxes across the country.

Voters will choose 18 mayors, 220 city council members, 240 headmen and 960 council of elders, according to the country's Supreme Election Board (YSK).

Turkish Cypriots will decide on 67 candidates, six of them women, for the mayoral posts.

Northern Cyprus gives UN one month for recognition 'or leave'

6 October 2022; MEMO: The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has given the UN one month to recognise the country, or the UN forces deployed on the island should leave, Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu said on Wednesday. The only country which recognises the republic is Turkiye.

Turkish vice president, Turkish Cypriot president discuss Cyprus issue

29 Jan 2022; MEMO: Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay discussed the Cyprus issue with Ersin Tatar, president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Turkiye's Communications Directorate said on Saturday, Anadolu Agency reports.

The two also discussed the latest developments in the region and cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was held at the official residence of Oktay.

Turkey readies part of Cyprus ghost-town for civilian use

22 July 2021; MEMO: Turkish Cypriot authorities announced on Tuesday the partial reopening of the abandoned town of Varosha, Al Jazeera reports.

Varosha, an eerie collection of derelict high-rise hotels and residences, has been deserted since a 1974 war that split the island, a military zone nobody has been allowed to enter.

'Sovereign equality required to resolve Cyprus issue': Turkish FM

03 Feb 2021; MEMO: The Turkish foreign minister on Tuesday stressed the importance of negotiations based on sovereign equality to resolve the Cyprus issue, reports Anadolu Agency.

Negotiation on sovereign equality is required in resolving the Cyprus issue, "if there is sovereign equality, then there can be two states," Mevlut Cavusoglu told a joint news conference with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), President Ersin Tatar, in Lefkosa.

Northern Cyprus slams EU declaration on East Mediterranean

17 May 2020; MEMO: The premier of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Saturday slammed the EU declaration urging Turkey to “respect EU countries’ maritime jurisdiction and sovereignty in territorial waters.”, Anadolu reports.

“It is a violation of law and lack of vision that the EU still adopts a pro-Greek Cyprus attitude and ignore the rights of Turkish Cypriot and Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean,” said Prime Minister Ersin Tatar.
