At Least 17 Killed In Bangladesh Bus Crash

DHAKA, Mar 19 (NNN-BSS) – At least 17 people were killed and more than 26 others injured, when a passenger bus veered off the road and fell into a ditch, in Bangladesh’s central Madaripur district, some 63 km south of the capital, Dhaka, today.

Abdullahel Baki, a local Shibchar Highway Police official, told reporters that, “the passenger bus fell into a roadside ditch, leaving 14 passengers dead on the spot and about 25-26 were injured.”

He said, three of the injured died on the way to local hospitals.

Bangladesh: Chinese embassy donates smart classroom to Bangladeshi college

DHAKA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh has launched a project for talent development, donating the first smart classroom with the latest smart education solution from Huawei to a Bangladeshi college.

Chandpur Government Technical School and College in Chandpur district, about 115 km southeast of the capital Dhaka, received the classroom.

“Bangladesh Business Summit 2023” Kicked Off In Dhaka

DHAKA, Mar 12 (NNN-BSS) – The apex trade organisation of Bangladesh, held the “Bangladesh Business Summit 2023” in partnership with the Bangladeshi government here yesterday.

The three-day summit came, as part of efforts to further boost the country’s growing trade, commerce and investment sectors.

Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the summit to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the country’s top business body.

Fire at Rohingya camp in Bangladesh leaves refugees homeless

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — A massive fire at a crammed camp for Rohingya Muslims in southern Bangladesh left thousands of the refugees homeless Sunday, a fire official and the United Nations said.

No casualties were reported at Balukhali camp in Cox’s Bazar district, said Emdadul Haque, a fire service official.

The UNHCR in Bangladesh said in a tweet that Rohingya refugee volunteers responded to the fire with the agency and its partners providing support. It provided no further details.

Fire Broke Out At Highrise In Bangladesh Capital Dhaka

DHAKA, Feb 20 (NNN-BSS) – A devastating fire broke out at a multi-storey building in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, last night, with no death reported, so far.

At least seven fire engines were fighting the fire on the sixth floor of the 12-storey building, in Dhaka’s diplomatic area, Gulshan, which is sending thick black smoke into the air visible at least several km away.

The cause of the fire, which broke out around 7:00 p.m. local time (1300 GMT), has not been ascertained, with the security officials yet to comment on the incident.

Bangladesh Declared One-Day State Mourning Over Deadly Quakes In Türkiye, Syria

DHAKA, Feb 9 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government has declared a one-day state mourning today, for the deaths in earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

The Bangladeshi Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification in this regard yesterday.

The national flag is hoisted at half-mast, atop office buildings of all government, semi-government, autonomous organisations, educational institutions and Bangladeshi missions abroad.

Special prayers will also be offered at different religious institutions.

Bangladesh's largest annual book fair begins in Dhaka

DHAKA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's largest annual book fair kicked off in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.

The Amar Ekushey Boi Mela, which literally means "Immortal Twenty First Book Fair," is being held in Dhaka's Bangla Academy premises and its adjacent Suhrawardy Udyan (garden).

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the month-long book fair.

Bangla Academy Director General Poet Nurul Huda said police have tightened security in and around the Bangla Academy premises to ensure security of book lovers and publishers at the fair.

Bangladesh sees robust rise in overseas employment

DHAKA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Remittance-reliant Bangladesh witnessed a big boom in overseas employment last year amid growing demand of huge workforce particularly in the Middle East and Asian countries, a senior official said Sunday.

The official of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), told Xinhua that "1,135,873 Bangladeshis in 2022 found overseas jobs, a rise of more than 84 percent over the same period of the previous year."

Bangladesh Seeks Assistance From World Bank, Partners To Attain Development Goals

DHAKA, Jan 24 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government made a plea to the development partners, including the World Bank (WB), to continue their support to the country to attain its development goals.

Bangladeshi Finance Minister, AHM Mustafa Kamal, made the call while addressing a function marking the celebration of 50 years of partnership between the Bangladeshi government and the World Bank, in the capital, Dhaka.

“We seek all-out support from our development partners, including the World Bank in this regard,” the minister was quoted as saying.

Bangladesh earns over 27 bln USD from exports in July-December of 2022

DHAKA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's total exports in the first half of the current 2022-23 fiscal year (July 2022-June 2023) reached over 27 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.58 percent year on year, the latest official data showed.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data posted on its website showed that Bangladesh earned 27,311.26 million dollars from exports in July-December of 2022, compared to 24,698.55 million dollars a year earlier.
