India: Rhea Chakraborty arrested by NCB

Mumbai, Sep 8 (PTI) Sushant Singh Rajput's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was on Tuesday arrested in Mumbai by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with drugs- related allegations in the actor's death case, an NCB official said.

Rhea was arrested after three days of questioning in the case, the official said.

Rhea, 28, had earlier denied consuming drugs. Her brother Showik Chakraborty was arrested last week in the case.

India's hiring outlook bleakest in 15 yrs: Survey

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) India is witnessing the weakest hiring sentiment in 15 years with just 3 per cent companies planning to add staff in the next three months, a survey of over 800 employers said on Tuesday.

According to the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey, that covered 813 firms across India, Indian employers report cautious hiring plans for the final quarter of 2020.

India scaling up production of active pharmaceutical ingredients: Kant

Washington, Sep 8 (PTI) India, a global hub for generic drugs, has launched a new scheme to boost production of active pharmaceutical ingredients that are greatly dependent on the Chinese supply chain, according to NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant.

Speaking at the 14th Annual BioPharma and Healthcare Summit, he said India is now gearing up for innovation in its pharmaceutical ecosystem focusing on speedy and scaled up delivery of new vaccines and personalised medicines.

India: Noted scientist Govind Swarup dead

Pune, Sep 7 (PTI) Renowned radio astronomer and scientist Govind Swarup died on Monday night in a private hospital here in Maharashtra following illness, the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) said in a statement.

He was 91.

Swarup, the doyen of Indian radio astronomy, was the founding director of the NCRA, which is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

India: J&K glaciers melting at 'significant' rate, study finds

Srinagar, Sep 8 (PTI) Glaciers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are melting at a "significant" rate, according to a first-of-its-kind study which used satellite data to find that over 1,200 glaciers in the Himalayan region saw an annual reduction in mass of 35 centimetres (cm) on average between 2000 and 2012.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was carried over the Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh region, including areas across the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), and in all 12,243 glaciers were studied for thickness and mass changes.

India: UP lifts weekend curbs on markets

Lucknow, Sep 8 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday revoked its order of mandatory closure of markets on Sunday, reverting to the pre-coronavirus lockdown arrangement.

According to a statement, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in a review meeting that markets will now close as per their earlier schedule instead of the weekly closure on Sunday.

He said except containment zones, hotels and restaurants should be made operational in all areas and it should be ensured that all safety measures are followed.

India: UP govt suspends Allahabad SSP Abhishek Dixit

Lucknow, Sep 8 (PTI) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath suspended Allahabad Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Dixit on Tuesday for his failure to control crime and corruption and maintain law and order, said Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi.

Dixit is also charged with not following the instructions of the government/headquarters properly and is accused of promoting corruption, a home department spokesperson added.

India: KMC opts out solar energy to save electricity expenses

Kanpur: In continuation of its money-saving campaign the Nagar Nigam prepares itself to bring in use the rooftop solar energy plant. A solar panel with a capacity of 100 KW will be installed on the top of its office.

Throwing light on this step, Akshay Tripathi, Nagar Ayukt, KMC, expressed that it was expected to begin the solar panelling work in this ongoing month. 

In the meantime, the UPNEDA has received a budget of Rs 42 Lakh for this very purpose.

India: Actor Malaika Arora tests COVID-19 positive

Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI) Actor-host Malaika Arora on Tuesday announced that she has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining at her home.

The Bollywood diva said she is asymptomatic and following all the required protocols.

Today I have tested positive for coronavirus but I want to inform you all that I am feeling fine, Malaika wrote in a statement posted on Instagram.
