India: Lucknow Metro resumes services after 5 months

Lucknow, Sep 7 (PTI) The Lucknow Metro resumed services on Monday after being closed for over five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The services started at 6 am at all 16 stations with a thin crowd but the number of passengers increased later in the day, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation PRO Panchanan Mishra told PTI.

The Lucknow Metro became the first metro service in the country to use ultraviolet (UV) technology for token sanitisation to ensure the safety of passengers, he said.

India becomes 2nd worst-hit country, economic pain is urgent

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s increasing caseload made the Asian giant the pandemic’s second-worst-hit country behind the United States on Monday as its efforts to head off economic disaster gain urgency.

The 90,802 cases added in the past 24 hours pushed India’s total past Brazil with 4.2 million cases. India is now only behind the United States, which has more than 6 million. India’s Health Ministry on Monday also reported 1,016 deaths for a total of 71,642, the third-highest national toll.

India, Pakistan Troops Exchange Fire On Kashmir Loc

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Sept 6 (NNN-UNI) – Troops of India and Pakistan, yesterday exchanged heavy fire and targeted each other’s positions, on Line of Control (LoC), dividing Kashmir, Indian officials said.

The two sides exchanged fire on LoC in Shahpur, Kirni and Degwar sectors of frontier Poonch district, about 180 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The firing started at 9:15 a.m. local time, and the exchange of fire was going on until the last reports poured in.

Indian Fin Min Sitharaman blaming gods for failure of economy: Raut

Mumbai, Sep 6 (PTI) Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday alleged that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was blaming gods for failure of India's economy.

In his weekly column Rokhthok in the Sena mouthpiece Saamana, Raut also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks on all issues, but refuses to touch the issue of "failing economy" and related issues.

India: BJP distances itself from its election campaigner actress Ragini Dwivedi

Bengaluru, Sep 6 (PTI) The Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka on Sunday said Kannada actress Ragini Dwivedi, arrested in a drug case, was never a member of the party and may have campaigned for it in the 2019 Assembly by-elections on her own.

Seeking to distance itself from the actress a day after her arrest, the BJP said it was against any sort of, or any form of anti-social activity by anybody.

India: Borrow more to stimulate demand, revive economy: Chidambaram to govt

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram on Sunday suggested the government to borrow more to help stimulate demand and revive the country's economy.

The senior Congress leader also suggested some measures to raise money which include relaxing FRBM norms, accelerating disinvestment and borrowing money from global banks.

India: Criminal wanted for killing UP BJP leader held in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 5 (PTI) A 32-year-old criminal carrying a reward on his head was nabbed from suburban Mumbai on Saturday in connection with sensational killings of a businessman in Noida and BJP leader Rakesh Sharma in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accused, Pravin alias Ashu alias Akash Rajendra Singh, heads the infamous Mirchi gang, a crime branch official said.

The Uttar Pradesh police had announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh on Singh and his gang members, he said.

India: Two complaints seek FIR against Kangana over PoK comment

Mumbai, Sep 5 (PTI) Two separate complaints have been filed with the police here against actor Kangana Ranaut over her remark where she compared Mumbai to Pakistan- occupied-Kashmir (PoK).

While one of the complaints was submitted by Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh, a lawyer, at Andheri police station on Friday, another was submitted at Azad Maidan police station by a city Congress functionary.

India: Kejriwal kickstarts Delhi govt's anti-dengue campaign

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) The Delhi government's 10-week anti-dengue campaign kicksarted on Sunday, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal checking his house for stagnant water.

The campaign seeks to build greater awareness on prevention of vector-borne diseases in Delhi.

"Honourable Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal kickstarted the anti-dengue campaign by removing the stagnant clean water at his residence. He said that like last year, two crore Delhiites will come together to make this initiative successful and to defeat dengue," the Chief Minister's Office tweeted.

India: Teenaged girl found dead in UP's Lakhimpur Khiri

Lakhimpur Khiri (UP), Sep 6 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl was found dead in mysterious circumstances in a village here on Sunday, police said.

They said the body was found hanging from the thatched roof of a house with a scarf.

Lakhimpur Khiri SP Satendra Kumar Singh, Additional SP Arun Kumar Singh and Mitauli Circle Officer Shitanshu Kumar rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and carried out initial investigations.

The officials talked to the parents and other family members of the gir,police said.
