India: Forex reserves climb USD 582 mn to USD 542.013 bn

Mumbai, Sep 11 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves rose by USD 582 million to reach a lifetime high of USD 542.013 billion in the week ended September 4, RBI data showed on Friday.

In the previous week ended August 28, the reserves had surged by USD 3.883 billion to USD 541.431 billion.

In the reporting week, the foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, increased by USD 269 million to USD 498.362 billion, the data showed.

India: Social activist Swami Agnivesh passes away

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) Social activist Swami Agnivesh, who was suffering from liver cirrhosis for a long time, died of multi-organ failure at a Delhi hospital on Friday, doctors said. He was 80.

His last rites will be performed on Saturday at Agnilok Ashram in Behelpa, Gurgaon at 4 pm. Before that, his body will be kept at his office in 7, Jantar Mantar Road so that people can pay last respects.

Those coming to pay last respects have been urged to follow COVID-19 protocols.

India: Nitish and Nadda hold seat-sharing talks for Bihar polls

Patna, Sep 12 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday held a crucial meeting with BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda on seat-sharing among the NDA alliance partners for the assembly elections in the state.

Nadda, who was accompanied by party colleagues like Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, national general secretary and state in-charge Bhupendra Yadav and state president Sanjay Jaiswal, called on Kumar at his official residence 1, Anney Marg.

Five Indian youths 'abducted' by PLA handed over to Indian Army

Itanagar, Sep 12 (PTI) Five youths who were allegedly abducted by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China near the McMahon line in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri were released on Saturday in Anjaw district, around 1,000 km away.

The youths were handed over to the Indian Army by the PLA after completing necessary formalities, Tezpur-based defence spokesperson Lt Col Harsh Warrdhan Pande said.

India: New record of 97,570 COVID-19 infections in a day

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) India's COVID-19 caseload raced past 46 lakh with a record 97,570 infections being reported in a day, while 36,24,196 people have recuperated so far taking the national recovery rate to 77.77 per cent on Saturday, according to Union health ministry data.

The total number of coronavirus cases has mounted to 46,59,984, while the death toll climbed to 77,472 with 1,201 people succumbing to the infection in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Delhi govt directs mohalla clinics to begin COVID tests

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) Mohalla clinics in the city have been instructed to start COVID-19 testing with immediate effect as part of the Delhi government's strategy to ramp up testing amid a surge in coronavirus cases here.

According to an order issued on September 10 by Dr Shalley Kamra, state nodal officer of the Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinic (AAMC), tests will happen on all working days between 2 pm and 5 pm.

There are nearly 450 mohalla clinics in the national capital.

India: Delhi HC asks Arnab Goswami to show restraint and bring down rhetoric

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Thursday questioned Arnab Goswami for running a parallel investigation and trial in the Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar's death case and directed the journalist to be bound by his undertaking on showing restraint and bringing down the rhetoric while covering the matter.

Justice Mukta Gupta said the court was not saying that anyone will gag the media but at the same time, sanctity of investigation must be maintained.

India: 15-year-old raped in UP's Banda

Banda (UP), Sep 10 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped at a colony in a city area here, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place 10 days ago when the girl went to a hand pump to fetch water, Additional Superintendent of Police Mahendra Singh Chauhan said.

The accused, Birju Pandit, allegedly took her to a room and raped her, he said, adding the FIR was registered on Wednesday.

He said police is probing the matter and searching for the accused.
