India: Manoj Tiwari calls for joint stakeholders meeting to remove slums along rail tracks

New Delhi, Sep 13 (PTI) BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has written to Union Railways minister Piyush Goyal for a joint meeting of stakeholders including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for better planning and coordination for compliance of the Supreme Court order to remove 48,000 slum dwellings along railway tracks in the city.

Tiwari has also written a letter to the Delhi chief minister for the rehabilitation of the affected slum dwellers and arrangement of transit accommodation for them.

India: 70-yr-old woman raped, beaten up by man in UP's Ballia

Ballia, Sep 12 (PTI) A 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped and beaten up by a man in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia on Saturday following which the accused was arrested, police said.

The 25-year-old man forcibly entered the woman's house around 4 am and allegedly raped her, SHO of Haldi police station Satyendra Rai said.

The accused, who used to work in a house near the elderly woman's residence, also hurled abuses at the woman and thrashed her, he said.

India: Wife commits suicide after being tortured for dowry

Nagpur, Sep 12 (PTI) A Nagpur resident was booked after his 23-year-old wife allegedly committed suicide after being tortured for dowry, police said on Saturday.

Megha Dhande ended her life by consuming poison on Friday and her husband Amit has been charged under sections 498(a), 306 and 304(a) of Indian Penal Code, an official said.

"On the basis of a complaint given by Megha's sister, we have booked Amit for abetment of suicide and dowry harassment. Further probe is underway," he added.

India: Fake ghee manufacturing unit busted in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) The Delhi Police busted a fake ghee manufacturing unit in Outer Delhi's Bawana and arrested five men, officials said on Saturday.

Those arrested have been identified as Sandeep, Akash, Ratan, Rohit and Ankesh, they said.

The accused started the manufacturing unit before the lockdown began as they had lost their jobs. They manufactured ghee using oil, chemical-based colourants, essence and other chemicals, the police said.

India: Former UP minister and accused rapist Gayatri Prajapati remanded to 14-days judicial custody

Lucknow, Sep 11 (PTI) Former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati was on Friday remanded to 14-days judicial custody by a local court, a day after an FIR was lodged against him on charges of fraud, forgery and criminal intimidation.

A senior police official told PTI that Prajapati, who was granted interim bail for two months on September 4 by the Allahabad High Court in a gang rape case, was in judicial custody as he could not fulfil bail conditions.

India: NGT directs CPCB to recover fine from Amazon, Flipkart for excessive plastic packaging

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to conduct environmental audit and recover fine from Amazon and Flipkart for violation of environmental norms.

The green panel observed that the statutory regulators were not taking coercive measures, including invoking of "polluter pays" principle for enforcing the statutory norms against the e-commerce firms.

India: Congress announces names of 15 candidates for MP bypolls

Bhopal, Sep 11 (PTI) The Congress on Friday announced names of 15 candidates for the upcoming by-elections to 27 Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh.

The list was issued by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Mukul Wasnik in-charge of Central Election Committee (CEC) with the approval of party president Sonia Gandhi, state Congress spokesman Narendra Saluja told PTI.

India: WB begins procedure to send back B'deshi prisoners

Kolkata, Sep 11 (PTI) West Bengal correctional services department has begun the official procedure to send back around 650 Bangladeshi prisoners who have completed their terms and are lodged in various prisons.

This is among the several measures taken by the department to prevent crowding in jails in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The process to send back the Bangladeshi prisoners, who had completed their tenures to their country has started.

India: Industrial production declines 10.4 pc in July

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) Industrial production shrank by 10.4 per cent in July, mainly due to lower output of manufacturing, mining and power generation sectors, official data showed on Friday.

Explaining the reasons behind the fall in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said a large number of industrial units were not operating from the end of March due to the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19.
