Delhi govt presents Rs 69,000-Cr budget for FY 2021-22

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Delhi government presented a Rs 69,000-crore budget themed on "patriotism" for financial year 2021-22 on Tuesday.

Presenting the budget, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the finance portfolio, said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has decided to celebrate the country's 75th Independence Day and will hold programmes for 75 weeks starting March 12.

India: Man gets death sentence in UP for raping 11-year-old

Lucknow, Mar 9 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district has awarded capital punishment to a man, who raped an 11-year-old girl last year, a senior official said here on Tuesday.

The special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Jaunpur sentenced Bal Govind to death on Monday for raping the girl in August 2020, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Kumar Awasthi said in a statement issued here.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Reaches 11,229,398 As Daily Cases On The Rise

NEW DELHI, Mar 8 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 11,229,398 today, as 18,711 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 157,853, as 97 COVID-19 patients died since yesterday morning.

India: Woman dies after beaten up by husband in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 8 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman died after she was allegedly beaten up by her husband here, police said on Monday.

Kusum got seriously injured after her husband attacked her with an iron rod when she tried to prevent him from drinking. She was admitted to a hospital and succumbed to injuries on Sunday, police said.

The incident took place at Athai village in Jansath tehsil on March 1, they added.

India: Madhya Pradesh Assembly passes anti-religious conversion bill

Bhopal, Mar 8 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Monday passed by voice vote a bill that checks religious conversions through marriage or by any other fraudulent means.

The bill earlier replaced the ordinance, cleared by the cabinet in December and promulgated in January, which had provisions of 10 years imprisonment in some cases and hefty fine for violators.

On March 1, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra presented the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Bill 2021 in the House.

India: Rajasthan Police SI suspended on rape charge

Jaipur, Mar 8 (PTI) A police sub-inspector was suspended on Monday on the charge of raping a 26-year-old woman in Rajasthan's Alwar district, an official said.

A case of rape under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 376 was registered against police sub-inspector Bharat Lal (52) on a complaint lodged by the woman, Alwar SP Tejaswini Gautam said.

The SP said the accused was arrested and suspended on Monday.

India: 29 people taken ill in UP after eating 'prasad'

Kannauj (UP), Mar 7 (PTI) Twenty nine people were admitted to a hospital when they complained of stomach ache after having 'prasad' during a religious function here, police said on Sunday.

A 'Bhagwat Khata' was organised at Jukhaya villeage here on Saturday night after which people ate 'prasad' at a 'Bhandara' following which they complained of stomach ache and were taken to the district hospital, police said.

Their condition was stated to be out of danger, police said.

India: College teacher in Kashmir in Udhampur booked under UAPA

Jammu, Mar 7 (PTI) A college teacher in Udhampur was arrested and booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for allegedly instigating and disturbing law and order in Kashmir valley, an official said on Sunday.

A police team from Kulgam district of south Kashmir arrested Shabir Ahmed from a college in Udhampur district on Saturday, they said.

India: PM Modi peddling lies to mislead voters: Mamata

Siliguri, Mar 7 (PTI) Launching a fresh tirade against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said he was "peddling lies to mislead the voters" in the poll-bound state.

Banerjee, addressing a rally here following her protest march over LPG price hike, said the prime minister made many "empty" promises over the years, and people no longer trust him.

She sought to know "why the PM has not yet deposited Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of every citizen, as promised by him before 2014 Lok Sabha polls".
