India: Dalit man found dead in UP's village

Amethi (UP), Mar 7 (PTI) A Dalit man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bhawalpur village, police said on Sunday.

The body of 20-year-old Ajit Kumar alias Sapling was found in a field, about 500 metres from his house, with gunshot injuries on his head, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Arpit Kapoor said.

The body has been sent for postmortem.

India: Akhil Gogoi to contest Assam polls from Sibsagar

Guwahati, Mar 6 (PTI) Jailed activist Akhil Gogoi will contest the upcoming elections in Assam from Sibsagar as a candidate of his newly-floated Raijor Dal.

Announcing the list of 17 candidates that the party fielded in the first two phases, Raijor Dal working president Bhasco De Saikia said that Gogoi, the party's president, will contest from the Sibsagar constituency in Upper Assam.

Delhi riots: HC pulls up police for leakage of charge sheet to media before cognisance

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Friday pulled up the Delhi Police for leakage of supplementary charge sheet filed in case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi last year to the media even before cognisance was taken by the concerned court, saying an offence is made out of the incident.

Justice Mukta Gupta asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to file an affidavit fixing responsibility on the person instrumental in leaking the information to the media.

India: SC to hear plea of Army officer's mother whose son is in Pakistan jail

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear a plea filed by the mother of an Army officer seeking direction to the Centre to take immediate steps through diplomatic channel for repatriation of her son, who is lodged in jail in Pakistan for last over 23 years.

India: Sharjeel moves HC, seeks quashing of FIR against him over speech

Mumbai, Mar 5 (PTI) Activist Sharjeel Usmani has approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Pune police for allegedly promoting enmity among different groups in his speech made at the Elgar Parishad event held in January this year.

In the petition filed earlier this week, Usmani termed the FIR as "frivolous and baseless", and said it has been registered "on the basis of certain select statements taken out of context".

Saudi asks India to use cheap oil it bought last year to cool prices

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) International oil prices rose after OPEC and its allies ignored India's plea to ease production control, with Saudi Arabia asking New Delhi to instead use oil it bought at rock bottom rates last year.

Brent crude, the most widely used benchmark, on Friday rose nearly 1 per cent to USD 67.44 a barrel after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, agreed not to increase supplies in April awaiting more substantial recovery in demand.

India: Six-year-old girl raped by man in UP's Etah

Etah (UP), Mar 5 (PTI) A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 25-year-old man here on Friday, police said.

The man sexually assaulted the girl when she was playing outside her house in the afternoon, they said.

The accused, who is said to be mentally-challenged, has been arrested, Station House Officer of Kotwali Police Station Pankaj Mishra said.

The girl has been sent for medical examination, he said.

India: Mamata Banerjee releases TMC list for 291 assembly seats

Kolkata, Mar 5 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday released the list of Trinamool Congress candidates for the upcoming assembly polls for 291 seats with emphasis on youths, minority, women and backward communities.

Three candidates of the Bimal Gurung faction of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), an ally of the TMC, will be contesting from the remaining three seats in Darjeeling.

India: DRDO conducts successful flight test of SFDR technology

Balasore (Odisha) Mar 5 (PTI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation on Friday successfully conducted a flight test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology in Odisha, official sources said.

The test was carried out at around 10.30 am from the integrated test range (ITR) launch platform at Chandipur, they said.

The successful demonstration of the SFDR technology will enable DRDO to develop long-range air to air missiles, the sources said.
