India: Four Naxals held in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada

Raipur, Mar 7 (PTI) Four Naxals, one of them carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, were arrested from two places in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on Sunday, police said.

While three of them were apprehended from a forest between Etepal and Jiakodta villages under Kuakonda police station limits, a Maoist commander was held near Medpal village under Aranpur police station area, they said.

India: Assam BJP minister joins Congress

Guwahati, Mar 7 (PTI) Unhappy with the denial of party ticket for the assembly election in Assam, BJP minister Sum Ronghang on Sunday joined the opposition Congress which is likely to field him from the Diphu constituency held by him.

The hill areas development and mines and minerals minister joined the Congress in presence of AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and the partys state unit chief Ripun Bora.

India: Confusion grips students' minds during exam time

Kanpur: Annual examinations are going on in the schools. The students are quite confused with the terror of the ongoing exams.

Some students were seen arriving at the school for appearing at science paper on Feb 8. It was their utter confusion  and mistake that they arrived.

They actually forgot to read the time table and reached the school. According to it, Feb 8 did not have science paper for Class VII students.

When they were told that the science paper was slated to be held on Tuesday (Feb 9).

India: Class 12 student fires at teacher in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Mar 7 (PTI) A class 12 student along with his three accomplices shot at his teacher here for scolding him for misbehaving with other students in class, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place near a private school located in Saraswati Vihar colony around 1.30 pm on Saturday when Sachin Tyagi, a commerce teacher, was going home on his motorcycle after finishing classes.

Superintendent of Police, rural, Iraj Raja told PTI that the student was admonished by the teacher as he was misbehaving with other students in the class.

India: SC seeks states' response on quota to specific class

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court sought responses from states on Monday on a question of "seminal importance" whether legislatures were competent to declare a particular caste to be socially and educationally backward for grant of quota.

The top court will examine the question of interpretation of the 102nd amendment to the Constitution dealing with reservation to a particular community, named in the list prepared by the President.

U.S. defence chief Austin likely to visit India soon - India government source

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is likely to visit India next week, an Indian government source told Reuters on Sunday, as the two allies seek to deepen military ties to counter the growing power of China in the Asia-Pacific region.

The first person visit by a top official of the new U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration will focus on enhancing cooperation, said the source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.

India's COVID-19 recovery rate falls to 96.94 pct

NEW DELHI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The countrywide recovery rate that was showing an increase for quite some time has decreased to 96.94 percent on Sunday, data released by the Indian health ministry showed.

"Till now 10,868,520 patients have been cured and 184,523 patients are under active medical supervision," the ministry said. "The national recovery rate is now 96.94 percent."

The recovery rate had surpassed the 97 percent mark at the beginning of February.

India: Man sentenced to life in prison in dowry death case in UP

Pratapgarh (UP), Mar 7 (PTI) A local court has awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing his wife for dowry in 2015

Additional Sessions Judge, Madhu Dogra, on Saturday also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on the convict Ajay Kumar Patel.

The FIR was registered by the victim's father, who said Patel and his family members killed his daughter for dowry in their house in Devgarh village in Lalganj on November 9, 2015.

Patel's family members were given a clean chit by the court for lack of evidence.

British co Cairn wants India to pay $1.4 bn, threatens to seek enforcement

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) British oil firm Cairn Energy plc on Sunday said its shareholders, including top financial institutions of the world, expect the use of the company's "strong powers of enforcement" to recover USD 1.4 billion from the Indian government should it not keep its word of honouring international arbitration tribunal awards on retrospective taxes.
