India: Man jailed for life for raping minor in UP

Ballia (UP), Mar 10 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old Dalit girl in 2018.

Special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Judge Shiv Kumar on Tuesday convicted Rahul Sahni for raping the girl.

The incident took place in a village in Chitbadgaon area on July 1, 2018. An FIR was registered by the girl's father alleging that she was raped by Sahni, Superintendent of Police Viping Tada said.

India: Tirath Singh Rawat to be new Uttarakhand chief minister

Dehradun, Mar 10 (PTI) Pauri Garhwal MP Tirath Singh Rawat was on Wednesday chosen as the leader of Uttarakhand BJP legislature party, paving the way for his becoming the new chief minister of the hill state.

His name was announced by outgoing chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat after the legislature party meeting, which lasted around 30 minutes.

Tirath Singh Rawat was the state BJP president from 2013-2015 and is currently the party's national secretary.

He was also an MLA from Chaubattakhal constituency from 2012-17.

Iran rejects blame for Israeli Embassy attack in Delhi

08 Mar 2021; MEMO: Iran has dismissed reports of its involvement in a recent low-intensity explosion near the Israeli mission in the Indian capital, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a detailed statement on Monday, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi rejected what it said were "unsubstantiated allegations," offering to cooperate with Indian authorities in the probe.

Libyan parliament convenes to vote on new government

The Libyan parliament's session kicked off on Monday in Sirte for a vote of confidence on the new interim government, Anadolu Agency reported.

The session began in the presence of 132 deputies – out of a total of 200 – chaired by Speaker of Parliament Aguila Saleh.

"Thank God, we meet today in Sirte to turn the page on division," Saleh said.

Earlier Monday, Libya's Prime Minister-designate Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh arrived in the coastal city of Sirte to present his unity government lineup to the House of Representatives.

India: BJP may replace U'khand CM

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) With the BJP mulling a change of leadership in Uttarakhand, state minister Dhan Singh Rawat has emerged as a frontrunner to replace Trivendra Singh Rawat as the chief minister.

Ajay Bhatt and Anil Baluni, two senior leaders from the state who are members of Parliament, are being seen as two other strong probables for the top post.

Sources said the party may also bring in a deputy chief minister, who will be from the Kumaon region.

Pushkar Singh Dhami is likely to be the deputy chief minister, they added.

India: Teen raped by man in UP's Fatehpur

Fatehpur (UP), Mar 9 (PTI) A girl was allegedly raped in the city area here, police said on Tuesday. The accused is absconding.

An FIR was registered by the girl against the accused on Monday evening alleging that she was raped by him on Sunday, SHO of City police station Satyendra Singh said.

He said the girl, who appeared to be around 17-18, has been sent for a medical examination and also to ascertain her age.

Delhi's economy projected to contract by 5.68 pc in FY21

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI) The economy of Delhi is expected to contract by 5.68 per cent in real terms while the per capital income is projected to fall to Rs 3.54 lakh in the current financial year due to the impact of the pandemic, according to Delhi Economic Survey 2020-21.

However, the advance estimate of the gross state domestic product (GSDP) of Delhi at current price during 2020-21 is Rs 7,98,310 crore, showing a contraction of 3.92 per cent over the previous year.
