India: Farmer unions call for Bharat bandh (clouser) on March 26

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI) Farmer unions on Wednesday called for a Bharat bandh on March 26, when their protest at Delhi's borders against the Centre's three new farm laws completes four months.

Farmer leader Buta Singh Burjgill said farmers along with trade unions will protest the hike in fuel prices and privatisation of railways on March 15.

India: Debt-ridden farmer ends life in Nagpur district

Nagpur, Mar 10 (PTI) A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at Mahadula in Nagpur district, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Rameshwar Shivcharan Kelekar (30).

As per his family, Kelekar had taken loans of over Rs 2 lakh from a nationalized bank and also by mortgaging jewelery but suffered losses as his cotton crop was damaged by unseasonal rains.

He had sold his paddy crop to the Maharashtra State Co-op Tribal Development Corporation but was yet to receive Rs 50,000 from it.

India: Khattar govt in Haryana survives trust vote comfortably

Chandigarh, Mar 10 (PTI) The BJP-JJP government in Haryana survived the floor test on Wednesday, comfortably defeating the no-confidence motion moved against it by the main opposition Congress.

The motion was defeated following the division of votes.

At the end of a marathon six-hour discussion on the motion, Speaker Gian Chand Gupta announced in the House that 55 members had voted against the motion while 32 legislators had backed it.

India: Married woman made to drink alcohol, raped by 3 in UP

Pilibhit (UP), Mar 10 (PTI) Three people have been arrested for allegedly making a married woman drink alcohol and raping her in Puranpur Kotwali police station area here, police said on Wednesday.

A case was registered in this connection on Wednesday against Pawan Kumar, Chote and Umesh, Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash Yadav told media.

India: BJP leaders visit hospital where Mamata is admitted

Kolkata, Mar 11 (PTI) A delegation of BJP leaders on Thursday visited the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is undergoing treatment.

Former governor of Tripura and Meghalaya Tathagata Roy and state BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya, who went to the state-run hospital, said that they could not meet the Trinamool Congress chief owing to medical reasons.

"We conveyed our concern to the TMC leaders present, including minister Arup Biswas, and wished the chief minister a speedy recovery," Bhattacharya said.

India: Police register case over 'attack' on Mamata

Nandigram (WB), Mar 11 (PTI) A case was registered on Thursday over the attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following a complaint lodged by TMC leader Sheikh Sufian, police said.

The case was lodged under IPC sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), a senior police officer of the Purba Medinipur district said.

"We have received a complaint from Mr Sufiyan. Our investigation is already underway and we are collecting evidence," the officer said.

India: Man gets 10 years in UP's Ballia for abducting, raping teenager

Ballia (UP), Mar 11 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district has sentenced a man to 10 years of imprisonment for abducting and raping a 16-year-old girl in 2016.

Additional Sessions Judge Omkar Shukla also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict, Rajesh Kumar alias Jarsi.

The girl was abducted and raped on Feb 9, 2016 in a village in Rasda area, Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada said.

An FIR in this connection was registered at Rasda police station on the basis of the complaint of the girl's uncle.

India: KDA boundary to be expanded in 2031 Master Plan

Kanpur: The limits of Kanpur Development Authority will be increased in the new master plan. There will be emphasis on the development works.

As many as 386 villages will be included in the 2031 Master Plan. Akbarpur's 58 villages will be brought under its precincts. 

Suggestions have been sought. All the departments have been told to produce details of the proposed plans and also of the present plans so that the finalisation of land use could be prepared.

A few builders have raised demand to change the land use of the closed mills.

Mauritania: ex-president in court on corruption charges

10 Mar 2021; MEMO: The former President of Mauretania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, appeared in court yesterday on corruption charges, one of more than a hundred defendants including former officials. There was tight security around the Palace of Justice in Nouakchott for the appearance.

There was also tight security at the National Security Department, the headquarters of the economic crime police, which over the past months have been investigating the case against Ould Abdel Aziz.

India: Delhi High Court stays ED summons to Mehbooba Mufti

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave an interim stay on summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate to former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, her daughter said.

The matter came up for hearing before a division bench of Justices Siddarth Mridul and Hairam Bhambhani. The matter was posted for March 18 with a direction to the ED not to press for her personal appearance on March 15.
