India: Mamata files nomination from Nandigram assembly seat

Haldia (WB), Mar 10 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination from the high-profile Nandigram assembly seat, where she will be pitted against her former protege and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Accompanied by party president Subrata Bakshi, Banerjee filed her papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office here, after taking part in a 2-km roadshow.

India: RJD joins Congress-led Grand Alliance in Assam

Guwahati, Mar 9 (PTI) The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Tuesday said that it has joined the opposition Congress-led 'Grand Alliance' in Assam and will contest one seat during the first phase of the assembly election.

With this, the number of constituents in the Grand Alliance has gone up to eight.

RJD Assam president Shonarul Shah Mustafa told PTI that the party has formally joined the opposition grouping and it will contest the Tinsukia constituency which will go to polls during the first phase on March 27.

India: Delhi will bid for 2048 Olympic Games: CM Kejriwal

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Delhi government aims to host the 2048 Olympic Games and it will create whatever infrastructure and facilities required for it, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday.

Delhi hosted the first Asian Games in 1951, and the ninth edition in 1982. In 2010, the national capital had hosted the Commonwealth Games.

"Delhi will bid for the 2048 Olympic games. We will create whatever infrastructure and other facilities are required for it," Kejriwal said during a post-budget press conference.

India: Gold coins from Mughal period found near Pune

Pune, Mar 9 (PTI) Over 200 Mughal-era gold coins, dating back to the early 18th century, have been seized from the possession of a family of construction workers in Pimpri Chinchwad near here, police said on Tuesday.

Some members of the family had found the coins while working at a construction site, said Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash.

India: Farmer leaders to visit poll-bound West Bengal, Assam

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farmer unions protesting against the Centre's three agri laws, on Tuesday said it would send a team of leaders to the poll-bound West Bengal and Assam in a bid to appeal to voters not to vote for the "anti-farmer" BJP.

Farmer leader Darshan Pal said in a statement that the visit will be spread over three days starting from March 12.

Pal told PTI that the team will have 4-5 people including him and Yogendra Yadav.

India: Pune cops arrest second Major rank officer in Army paper leak case

Pune, Mar 9 (PTI) Pune police on Tuesday arrested another Major rank officer in connection with the February 28 Army recruitment exam paper leak, an official said.

The 45-year-old serving officer was detained in Delhi for questioning and arrested after being brought here, he said.

The arrested officer had forwarded the question paper to one of the accused, the Pune police official said on condition of anonymity.

He will be produced in court on Wednesday, he added.

India: Editors Guild expresses shock at GoM report on media

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Editors Guild of India (EGI) on Tuesday expressed "shock and disbelief" at the recent report of a group of ministers (GoM) suggesting steps to "neutralise" the negative narrative against the government.

It said the GoM report illustrates government's "increasingly draconian attitude" against any critique and inquiry by the press.

India: Youth rapes a minor girl in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 9 (PTI) A minor girl was raped by a youth in Rampuri locality of Kotwali police station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident happened on Monday as the Class 10 student was taken to the accused man's house where she was raped by him and threatened of dire consequences.

Police said a case was registered against the accused identified as Sorabh, who has been arrested.

The girl has been taken for a medical examination.

India: Woman Naxal held, right activists allege police frame-up

Raipur, Mar 9 (PTI) Police have arrested a tribal woman on charges of being a Naxal in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on Tuesday, evoking sharp criticism from activists who claimed she was being implicated.

Police said at least five Naxal-related offences were registered against the woman and she was carrying a cash reward on her head.

However, activists claimed the woman was a tribal rights campaigner.

India: Minor girl raped by two in UP's Kanpur

Kanpur (UP), Mar 9 (PTI) A 13-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in Sajeti area here, police said on Tuesday.

The girl, a class 8 student, was admitted to Community Health Centre (Ghatampur) from where she was referred to a private hospital in Kanpur, a senior official said.

An FIR has been registered against Deepu Yadav, his brother Saurabh Yadav and friend Golu Yadav in connection with the incident, Superintendent of Police (rural) Brajesh Srivastava said.
