Saudi Arabia: tribesmen jailed for refusing NEOM displacement

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Saudi Arabia has handed a 50-year prison term and a 50-year travel ban to two members of the Huwaitat, a large nomadic Bedouin tribe which lives on both sides of the Saudi-Jordanian border. The men have refused to be displaced from their ancestral homeland to make way for the $500 billion NEOM megacity.

Egypt frees detained Al Jazeera journalist

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Egyptian authorities have released Al Jazeera journalist. Ahmed Al Nagdy from detention, the pan-Arab, Qatar-based television network reported on Wednesday, quoting Al Nagdy's lawyer, Reuters reports.

The move comes as Egypt's President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, visits Doha, his first since the two countries restored relations last year following a regional diplomatic rift.

The visit comes as Egypt seeks further financial support and investment to cushion an economic shock caused by the war in Ukraine.

Israel security recommends closure of northern West Bank

15 Sep 2022; MEMO: Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet, has recommended closing some cities and towns in the northern occupied West Bank, Israeli media reported yesterday.

The Shin Bet's recommendation included the closure on the Jenin area where the security situation is "getting out of control," according to a security official who was quoted in the Jerusalem Post.

Palestinian factions call for quitting Oslo and ending security cooperation

15 Sep 2022; MEMO: Palestinian resistance factions called on Wednesday for a total withdrawal from the Oslo Accords and an end to security cooperation between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli occupation security services, Quds Press has reported. Speaking on behalf of the factions, senior Islamic Jihad official Nafeth Azzam said that Oslo gave "legitimacy" to the Israeli occupation and illegal Jewish settlements.

PA calls on Norway to pressure Israel to protect two-state solution

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh yesterday called on Norwegian MPs to pressure their government to protect the two-state solution.

During a meeting held in Ramallah with a delegation of 15 Norwegian MPs, headed by Ine Eriksen Søreide, Shtayyeh stressed the need to work internationally to protect the "eroding" two-state solution.

Israel notifies 15 Palestinian families to leave their Jerusalem homes

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities yesterday notified Bedouin residents of Arab Al Kaabneh, located between the towns of Bir Nabala and Beit Hanina, to evacuate their homes.

The supervisor of the Al-Baydar Organisation for the Defence of Bedouin Rights, Hassan Mleihat, said in a statement that Israeli occupation forces stormed the area where the Kaabneh Bedouin tribe live and handed 15 families evacuation notices.

Egypt: 3 prisoners die over 48 hours in prison

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Three prisoners have died in Egyptian jails over a two day period, with human rights groups calling for investigations into the deaths and conditions they were held in, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported yesterday.

The paper said Mohmmad Zaki passed away on Saturday in Al Gamassa Prison following the deterioration of his health.

Zaki was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being charged for arson against a court in the city of Ismailiya, east of Egypt.

Greek forces accused of killing 2 babies during push back operation

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: The Turkish coastguard has said that six migrants, including two babies, have died after being pushed back into Turkish waters by Greek forces.

The migrants told the coastguard that they asked for help from Greek security forces after running out of fuel, reports the New Arab, close to the Greek island of Rhodes.

They were transferred to a Greek boat, their valuables taken off them, and then left adrift close to Turkish waters.
