India: Centre's "colonial settler project" initiated: Mehbooba on latest ECI order

Srinagar, Oct 12 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday flayed the Election Commission's order for registration of new voters in Jammu, charging that the Centre's "colonial settler project" has been initiated in the region.

The former J-K chief minister said the BJP's alleged attempts to create religious and regional divisions between Jammu and Kashmir must be "thwarted" because "whether its a Kashmiri or a Dogra, safeguarding our identity and rights will be possible only if we put up a collective fight".

India: SC delivers split verdict in Karnataka hijab ban matter, matter referred to CJI

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a split verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state.

While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the appeals against the high court verdict, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed them.

Palestinians protest as Jerusalem refugee camp locked down

13 October 2022; MEMO: Hundreds of people protested at checkpoints into a refugee camp in Jerusalem and protests between Palestinians and Israeli security forces broke out across the West Bank on Wednesday, with a Palestinian killed near the southern city of Hebron, Reuters reports.

The incidents continue months of escalating tensions that have deepened since Israeli forces began a crackdown in the occupied West Bank in late March that killed 19 people.

Israel is the fifth worst country to work in the world: Report

12 October 2022; MEMO: Israel has been ranked as the fifth worst country in the world to work in, according to a report by the international insurance firm, William Russell.

The firm compiled a list of countries with the least favourable employment conditions, ranking each based on a score from 0 to 10.

The report explained that the average person in Israel works extremely high working hours, resulting in almost 36.6 hours per week.

Israel delays expelling Palestinian family from Jerusalem due to escalating violence

11 October 2022; MEMO: The Israeli Public Security Minister denied a request by the extreme far-right nationalist politician and Interior Minister, Ayelet Shaked, to forcibly remove a Palestinian family from their home in Jerusalem.

Omer Bar-Lev expressed concerns regarding the escalation of violence amid the Yom Kippur celebrations and will, therefore, wait till the celebrations are over.

USA: Prosecutors drop charges against Adnan Syed in ‘Serial’ case

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Prosecutors dropped charges against Adnan Syed on Tuesday in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee, a case that was chronicled in the first season of the hit podcast “Serial.”

Emily Witty, a spokeswoman for the city of Baltimore’s state’s attorney’s office, said in an email that her office had dropped its case against Syed and would release further details about its decision later Tuesday.

16 Australian women being repatriated from northeast Syria will be detained immediately on arrival

11 October 2022; MEMO: Sixteen Australian women who will be repatriated from camps in northeast Syria will be detained immediately on arrival in Australia.

The women and 42 children, who will also return to Australia, are wives and children of former Islamic State members and have been kept in camps since March 2019.

According to the WSWS, some of the women will appear in court, others will be charged with terrorism-related offences.

Palestine: Moving UK embassy to Jerusalem undermines city's harmony; Jerusalem churches

11 October 2022; MEMO: The Council of the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem has expressed "grave concern" over Britain's intention to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem, warning that the move would "severely undermine the key principle" of corpus separatum, which relates to Jerusalem's special status as a city holy to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike.
