Climate activist Greta Thunberg signs petition calling on Egypt to release political prisoners

21 October 2022; MEMO: Climate activist Greta Thunberg has said on Twitter that she has signed a petition calling on the Egyptian government to release political prisoners ahead of COP27.

Her support comes amid criticism that large green groups have not spoken out about the human rights situation in Egypt ahead of the UN summit.

OIC hails Australia move to de-recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital

18 October 2022; MEMO: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday welcomed a decision by the Australian government to end its recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Anadolu News Agency reports.

In a statement, the Jeddah-based grouping hailed Australia's "commitment to the two-state solution", adding that the Australian move "aligns with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions."

Saudi Arabia will release Al-Khudari and deport him to Amman

17 October 2022; MEMO: An official source in Hamas told Arabi 21 that the Saudi authorities will release the representative of Hamas, Muhammad Al-Khudari, who was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison, but his sentence then being reduced, later, to 6 years.

In exclusive statements to Arabi 21, the source said that Al-Khudari will be deported to Amman after his release, which was supposed to be today, but it was delayed until tomorrow due to some procedures.

Trump: 'I could easily become Israel's prime minister'

18 October 2022; MEMO: Former US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he could "easily" become Israel's prime minister as he wished that American Jews were more appreciative of what he has done for the occupation state.

"No President has done more for Israel than I have," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. "Somewhat surprisingly, however, our wonderful Evangelicals are far more appreciative of this than the people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the US."

France: Macron says 1961 Paris massacre of Algerians was unjustified

18 October 2022; MEMO: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that the killing of dozens of Algerian demonstrators in Paris in 1961 was "unjustified" and that his country "will not forget the victims." Macron made his comment on Twitter on the 61st anniversary of the massacre.

US Senator blocks $75m aid to Egypt over failure to make human rights reform

17 October 2022; MEMO: US Senator Patrick Leahy has blocked $75 million of aid to Egypt over its failure to make progress on human rights reform particularly the release of 60,000 political prisoners.

The annual military aid America gives Egypt, $1.3 billion, has come under heavy scrutiny in the last few years as Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has consolidated control over the country and continued to squeeze the space for free speech.
