India: Guwahati Bookfair put on hold due to Corona

Guwahati, Mar 8 (PTI) The 33rd Guwahati Bookfair, scheduled to be held later this month, has been put on hold indefinitely in the wake of the novel coronavirus outbreak, organisers said on Sunday.

The decision to postpone the event was taken in view of the Central government's advisory to avoid organising any event where a large number of people would be present, state- run Publication Board Assam said in a statement.

Authorities In India’s Kerala Sound Alert, As Bird-Flu Hits Poultry Farms

NEW DELHI, Mar 8 (NNN-PTI) – Authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala, on Saturday, sounded an alert, after it was found that bird-flu has hit poultry farms in one of the districts.

The bird flu virus was confirmed in poultry farms in Kozhikode district, about 400 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala.

“The influenza was found to have spread in a farm at Vengara and Kodiyathur,” an official at Kozhikode collectorate said. “Several birds have died in the farms but the flu has not so far affected humans.”

India: UP Guv cancels annual Holi Milan programme due to corona

Lucknow, Mar 7 (PTI) In view of coronavirus, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has cancelled the March 9 'Holi Milan' programme as a preventive measure, the Raj Bhawan said on Saturday.

Earlier, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had decided to stay away from 'Holi Milan' programmes and had appealed to people to refrain from attending social functions in view of coronavirus.

India: 41 people put under home isolation in Mizoram

Aizawl, Mar 6 (PTI) At least 41 people, who recently returned from foreign countries, have been put under home isolation in Mizoram, as a precautionary measure, and 14,868 persons have been screened for coronavirus, a senior official said on Friday.

State Health secretary H Lalengmawia told PTI that 41 people who have recently returned from China, Singapore, Macau, Dubai, USA, Seychelles and Hongkong are being put under home isolation though they did not show any symptoms of novel coronavirus.

India: SBI to pick up 49 pc stake in Yes Bank

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) State Bank of India will pick up 49 per cent stake in the crisis-ridden Yes Bank under a government-approved bailout plan, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman assuring that depositors' money is safe.

A day after imposing moratorium on Yes Bank and restricting withdrawals, the RBI on Friday evening issued a draft reconstruction scheme for the private sector lender and said SBI has "expressed its willingness" to make an investment.

India: PM Modi to travel to Bangladesh on March 17

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to Dhaka on March 17 in the midst of rising concerns in Bangladesh over India's new citizenship law and the proposed NRC.

Modi is visiting Dhaka at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina to attend the centenary celebrations of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

India: ED raids Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor's house in Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 6 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday raided the Mumbai residence of Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor in connection with a money-laundering probe against him and others, officials said.

They said the raid is being carried out at his Samudra Mahal residence in Worli.

India: EC nod to JVM(P) merger with BJP

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) The Election Commission has recognised the merger of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In its order issued on Friday, following the merger, JVM(P) has ceased to exist as a separate political party in Jharkhand. Hence, it is removed from the list of political parties maintained by the commission.

India: Girl raped in UP's Ballia

Ballia, Mar 7 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Thursday night in the village under Sahatwar police station limits, they said.

However, it came to light after a woman lodged an FIR alleging that her daughter was raped by a 19-year-old man, police said.

The girl has been sent for medical examination and investigations are on, they added.

India: Friday evening rains dampen hopes of seasonal change

KANPUR: Friday evening rains not only dropped the city's minimum temperature to 14 degrees Celsius on but also made residents feel quite cold. The day remains partly cloudy on Saturday. 

There were ample rains yesterday which the residents did not expect.

Just minutes after the drizzling began to start, the electricity supply was cut in several localities. It was restored only after about 7:45 p.m.
