India: Left, Congress lawyers take out anti-CAA rally in city

Kolkata, Mar 3 (PTI) Lawyers owing allegiance to the Left parties and Congress took out a rally in the city on Tuesday in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens.

The rallyists, carrying placards with slogans 'We oppose CAA', 'We oppose NRC', walked the 2 km distance from Mallickbazar to Park Circus crossing.

India: District court sends former UP minister to jail

Rudrapur, Mar 3 (PTI) A district court on Tuesday sentenced former Uttar Pradesh minister Prem Prakash Singh, his wife, son and daughter-in-law besides five others to rigorous imprisonment for various terms ranging from two to five years in a high profile land-grabbing case.

The court of judicial magistrate/civil judge senior division, Rudrapur sentenced the former minister to five years in prison.

India: Withdraw new provisions in NPR, Pondy CM tells Amit Shah

Puducherry, Mar 4 (PTI): Chief Minister of Puducherry V Narayanasamy on Wednesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to withdraw the new provisions in the National Population Register (NPR) 2020 as they were causing panic among the people.

In a letter to Shah, the Chief Minister said the population census should be as per the 2010 format and the additional provisions now included in the NPR should be withdrawn.

India: BJP suspends two local body leaders for anti-CAA stand

Mumbai, Mar 4 (PTI) The Maharashtra BJP has suspende the chairperson of a party-ruled municipal council and deputy head of another local body which recently passed resolutions against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye posted the suspension letters on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.

India: Assam lecturer arrested for derogatory post against PM

Silchar(Assam), Mar 4 (PTI) A Silchar court has granted bail to a guest lecturer at a local college, who was arrested for posting alleged derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS and the BJP on Facebook in wake of the violence in Delhi.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Silchar, on Tuesday granted bail to Souradeep Sengupta on a surety of Rs 15,000 and on the condition that he would cooperate with the police, and not leave the town without the court's permission.

17 Indians abroad infected with coronavirus

New Delhi, Mar 4 (PTI) Seventeen Indians have been infected with coronavirus abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.

Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said 16 cases were reported from Japan on the cruise ship and one from the UAE.

India: Detach census operations from NPR: CPI(M)

New Delhi, Mar 4 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Wednesday demanded that the government detaches the census operations from the National Population Register (NPR) process.

In a statement, the party said that given the opposition by several chief ministers over the NPR process, it is necessary to separate the collection of data for the census operation from the announced NPR enumeration.

India: Phase II of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) launched

New Delhi, Mar 4 (PTI) The second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), which has a total outlay of Rs 1,40,881 crore, was launched by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat here on Wednesday.

SBM (G) Phase-II will focus on sustaining the gains made in the first phase of the programme in the last five years in terms of toilet access and usage, and will ensure that no one is left behind, he said.
