India: Markets recoil as coronavirus cases spike; bank, finance stocks slump

Mumbai, Mar 4 (PTI) Equity indices resumed their downward march on Wednesday as domestic investors were spooked by a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in India.

The government on Wednesday said 28 Covid-19 cases have been detected in the country so far, up from six as of Tuesday. This includes a group of 16 Italian tourists and their Indian driver.

India: 2,575 rape cases reported in Chhattisgarh in 13 months

Raipur, Mar 4 (PTI) As many as 2,575 rape cases were registered in Chhattisgarh from January 1, 2019, to January 31, 2020, maximum of them in Raipur district, the state Assembly was informed on Wednesday.

In a written reply to a question by the BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal, Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu said 17,009 cases of dacoity, rape, theft, murder and loot were registered in the state during this 13-month period.

India: Scribe's widow given govt job

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 4 (PTI): The Kerala government on Wednesday issued order appointing widow of a senior journalist, who was killed after being hit by a car driven by IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman, at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam university in Tirur.

Jaseela, 32, a commerce graduate, would be posted as an assistant at the universty, the order stated.

India: Gairsain to be Uttarakhand's summer capital

Gairsain, Mar 4 (PTI) Twenty years after Uttarakhand was granted statehood, an announcement was made in the state assembly on Wednesday to make Gairsain its summer capital.

Immediately after finishing his budget speech in the assembly here, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat made the announcement which partially fulfils a longstanding demand of the hill people and seeks to put an end to an emotive political issue simmering for the last 20 years.

India: A few Madhya Pradesh MLAs land in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 4 (PTI) A few legislators from Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh are reportedly in the city, amid allegations of poaching attempts to destabilise Chief Minister Kamal Nath-led government.

According to sources, around three to four legislators are at a private place in the city's Whitefield area.

India: Youth killed on suspicion of being in love with girl

Nagpur, Mar 4 (PTI) A 17-year-old youth was allegedly killed by a man suspecting that he was in love with his daughter in Maharashtra's Gondia district on Wednesday.

The police arrested Sevakram Maniram Gurubele, resident of Morwahi village, for allegedly killing Atul Ashok Tarone, the youth.

India: 14-yr-old girl raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Mar 5 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man when she was alone in her house at a village here, police said on Thursday.

The 20-year-old man, who is at large, had also threatened the girl of dire consequences if she reported the matter, Station House Officer, Bhopa, Vijay Bahaur Singh, said.

He said an FIR was registered in the case on a complaint by the girl's mother.

India: Probe into police firing on anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 5 (PTI) As many as 29 police officers and personnel were examined by Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha, head of the magisterial enquiry into the police firing in the city in December 2019 which killed two anti- Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters.

A total of 176 police personnel have been directed to present their evidence before the magistrate for the enquiry.

India: Kerala to open 'safe homes' for inter-caste couples

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 5 (PTI): At a time when those marrying outside their caste and religion are facing ostracism and threats in several parts of the country, the Kerala government is gearing up to open 'safe homes' to ensure them a secure accommodation.

The Department of Social Justice has unveiled the unique initiative to open such safe facilities in all districts.

Social Justice Minister K K Shailaja said preliminary steps have begun to set up 'safe homes', where such couples can stay up to one year after marriage.
