India: Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in UP's Saharanpur

Saharanpur, Mar 8 (PTI) A debt-ridden farmer hanged himself to death in front of a bank in Sharanpur's Chhutmalpur, police said on Sunday.

SP (Rural) Vidya Sagar Mishra said the incident took place on Saturday evening and the farmer has been identified as 50-year-old Vedpal. He hanged himself from a tree, triggering panic in the area.

India: Cong asks CM to stop NPR work in Telangana

Hyderabad, Mar 8 (PTI) Congress Telangana unit president and Lok Sabha member N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday urged Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to stay all activities related to the National Population Register (NPR) in the state on the lines of the Kerala government and some other states.

He welcomed the move by the government to get a resolution adopted in the assembly against the Citizenship Amendment Act, NPR and National Register of Citizens.

India: Man under observation for coronavirus goes missing from Karnataka hospital

Mangaluru, Mar 9 (PTI) A person who arrived at the airport here from Dubai and was admitted to the isolation ward of a hospital with symptoms of coronavirus has gone missing, sources said.

The patient, who arrived on Sunday, was shifted to the district Wenlock hospital with a high fever and a few symptoms of coronavirus.

India: Headless body of a Muslim woman found in UP village

Bahraich, Mar 9 (PTI) The headless body of a woman was found in Arhgarha village here on Monday, police said.

Superintendent of Police Vipin Mishra said, "The headless body of a Muslim woman was found in Arhgarha village under Rupaidiha Police Station in an agriculture field of Arhar."

"She was wearing a burqa and green coloured salwar. The woman's head is missing," he added.

Mishra said a team has been formed to ascertain the identity of the of the deceased.

Kolkata, Mar 9 (PTI) Holi, the festival of colours, was celebrated with enthusiasm across West Bengal as men and women took to the streets smearing 'gulal' on each other's faces, while children sprinkled coloured water on others.

At several get-togethers in and around the city and various places across the districts, 'Basanto Utsab' was celebrated with much fanfare.

India: Investors lose nearly Rs 7 lakh cr on coronavirus fears

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) Investor wealth plummeted by nearly Rs 7 lakh crore on Monday as equity markets crashed tracking global equity sell-off amid mounting fears of an economic slowdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Market capitalisation (m-cap) of the BSE-listed companies saw a massive decline after the Sensex plunged over 2,467 points during the day, the 30-share index settled 1,941.67 points or 5.17 per cent lower at 35,634.95.

Likewise, the NSE Nifty slumped 538 points or 4.90 per cent to close at 10,451.45.

India: Guardians react as wards' journey to college ends

KANPUR: On the last day of examination of class 12th commerce stream the parents' waiting for their respective wards at the girls' college reacted quite differently. It was worth documenting.

One guardian said: "Aaj Barah Saal Ki Tapasya Puri Ho Gayi (today completes 12 years penance)." Another stated: "This college teaches English proficiently." Third one told: "Students studying at such ideal institutions do not prepare for exams under pressure."  The fourth one could not control himself in uttering that now the students would remember of their days passed at the college.

India: Govt invites bids for sale of BPCL

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) In the country's biggest ever privatisation drive, the government on Saturday invited bids for sale of its entire 52.98 per cent stake in India's second biggest oil refiner Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL).

Expressions of interest for the strategic sale of BPCL have been invited by May 2, as per the bid document by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).

India: Six of top-10 firms lose Rs 95,432 cr in m-cap; RIL takes biggest hit

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI) Six of the 10 most valued domestic companies suffered a combined erosion of Rs 95,432.26 crore in market valuation last week, dragged down by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and HDFC Bank amid a bearish trend in the broader market.

During the last week, the BSE Sensex plunged 720.67 points or 1.88 per cent. On Friday, the Sensex plummeted 894 points amid the Yes Bank crisis and coronavirus outbreak which has stoked fears of a global recession.
