India: Prashant Bhushan contempt case chronology, fined Rupee 1

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) Following is the chronology of events in which the Supreme Court on Monday imposed a token fine of Re 1 on activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan in a contempt case, which will have to be paid by September 15.

-- Jun 27: Bhushan tweets about undeclared emergency in the country and the role of the Supreme Court and last four chief justices of India.

-- Jun 29: Bhushan tweets about Chief Justice S A Bobde trying a Harley Davidson super-bike in his hometown Nagpur during the coronavirus outbreak.

India: In-charge of COVID hospital in UP's Deoria succumbs to virus

Deoria (UP), Aug 31 (PTI) A doctor in-charge of a COVID-19 facility here died after contracting the virus, officials said on Monday.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Alok Pandey, said that Dr Rajiv Ranjan had tested positive for coronavirus on August 19 and was admitted to the Gorakhpur Medical College where he died late on Sunday.

Dr Ranjan, who was posted at the Community Health Centre in Rudrapur, was made in-charge of the COVID-19 hospital in March.

India: Poor income curtails plying of buses in Kanpur region

Kanpur: Well, to be candid, as many as 118 roadways buses have been surrendered owing to low load factor and lesser revenue collection in Kanpur region.

According to the assistant regional manager, Rajesh Singh the passengers are not daring to make the journey through the buses because of corona pandemic.

With no sharp decline in the Coronavirus patients, the fear psychosis pervades deeply among the common people. That's why the increase in revenue does not look practical in a few days.

India sets global record with single-day rise in coronavirus cases

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India on Sunday reported the biggest single-day jump in coronavirus infections of any nation in the COVID-19 pandemic, as the epicentre shifts to the south Asian giant.

India’s 78,761 cases exceeded the 77,299 recorded in the United States on July 16, a Reuters tally of official data showed.

The world’s second-most populous nation is, with 3.54 million cases, the third-hardest hit by the pandemic, following the United States and Brazil, but its daily tallies have exceeded those of the other two countries for almost two weeks.

India: HC expresses concern over steep increase in insurance policies premium for advocates

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has expressed concern over the sudden "steep" increase in the premium of insurance policies by government companies for lawyers and said this would completely defeat the purpose of the Chief Minister's Advocates' Welfare Scheme.

The court perused a status report filed by the Delhi government, which showed that after the opening of the financial bids for the policies, the insurance companies have substantially increased the amount of premium and reneged on their earlier quotations given in November and December last year.

India: BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj forcibly put in 14-day home quarantine

Giridih (Jharkhand), Aug 29 (PTI) BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj was forcibly home quarantined here on Saturday for 14-day for violating COVID norms, a senior district official said.

The MP from Uttar Pradesh had come to Giridih, over 200 km from Ranchi, to take part in a programme from Unnao via Dhanbad.

India: Army officer duped of Rs 1.41 cr by cyber fraudsters

Jammu, Aug 29 (PTI) An Army officer here was duped of Rs 1.41 crore by five people posing as Union Finance Ministry officials, the Crime Branch said on Saturday.

The five-member gang of cyber fraudsters lured the officer into investing in a Canadian-based fund company with assured return of Rs 10 crore at the time of maturity 16 years later, it said.

A case was registered against the fraudsters after an inquiry into the complaint of the officer prima facie established that he was duped of the huge amount of money, it said in a statement here.

India: Woman sets herself on fire due to harassment by her husband and in-laws dies

Jalna, Aug 29 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman, who had allegedly set herself on fire due to harassment by her husband and in-laws in Maharashtra's Jalna district on August 11, succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Saturday, police said.

The deceased is identified as Asha Mittal.

As per the complaint lodged with the police, Asha's husband and in-laws used to cast aspersions on her character.

She had allegedly doused herself with some sanitiser and set herself ablaze at her residence here, an official said.

India: 17-year-old girl raped in Jammu

Jammu, Aug 29 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man here, following which the accused was arrested, police said on Saturday.

The girl alleged that the accused, identified as Suraj Singh of Jourian, called her to the neighbour's house on Friday and raped her, a police official said.

Acting on the complaint of the teenager, a case was registered at Kahna Chak police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: Woman sells one-month-old granddaughter for Rs 1.1 lakh

Karimnagar, Aug 29 (PTI) A woman in Karimnagar district of Telangana allegedly sold her infant granddaughter for Rs 1.10 lakh, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the infant's father got married about three years ago.

He was living in Hyderabad with his wife.

The mans wife gave birth to a baby girl one month ago and she was staying at her mothers place at Veenavanka in the district, they said.

The mans mother-in-law allegedly sold the baby on Friday as she was in need of money, they said.
