India: ED arrests alleged hawala dealer Naresh Jain

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested alleged hawala dealer Naresh Jain on Wednesday in a money laundering probe linked to hawala transaction deals worth multiple crores, officials said.

They said Jain has been placed under arrest under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and will be produced before a local court here.

Over 600 bank accounts and overseas transfers of over Rs 11,000 crore are under the scanner of the agency in this case.

India: Too much drink puts a number of men in psychosis

Chennai, Sep 2 (PTI) Excessive, regular consumption of alcohol after a break due to COVID-19 lockdown induced dry phase has landed a number of men in "alcohol induced psychosis," a mental condition marked by disrupted thinking, perceptions and behaviour, an expert said here on Wednesday.

Left with no other option, several people had been abstinent from alcohol for a considerable period of time during the lockdown, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Institue of Mental Health (IMH), Dr D Devi said.

India: 78,357 new cases in a day take India's COVID-19 tally past 3,700,000

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) India's COVID-19 tally of cases galloped past 37 lakh on Wednesday with 78,357 new instances of the disease reported in a day, while the number of recoveries crossed 29 lakh pushing the recovery rate to 76.98 per cent, the Union health ministry data showed.

The death toll climbed to 66,333 with 1,045 more fatalities reported in 24 hours. India has so far reported 37,69,523 cases of the viral disease, according to the data updated at 8 am.

India: Tuesday stays extraordinary day for registries

Kanpur: On September 1 there was registered a big spurt in the registries in the district? As many as 416 deeds were completed in one day.

It was more than the total tally of 408 deeds done on August 31. 

A maximum number of registries were reported from Zone-3. It was 133 in number on one single day on Tuesday.

A large sum of Rs 4 Crore was collected which remained a very promising figure for the particular day.

While on August 26 there was reported a revenue generation of Rs 2.58 Crore with a tally of 338 registries.

India: Rajiv Kumar takes over as election commissioner

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Former bureaucrat Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday assumed charge as the new election commissioner.

He takes the place vacated by Ashok Lavasa who joins the Asian Development Bank as vice president.

Kumar, a retired 1984-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, will have a five-year tenure and retire in 2025.

He will preside over the next Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

India: CAF jawan found dead, police suspect Naxal hand

Raipur, Sep 1 (PTI) A Chhattisgarh Armed Force head constable, who left from his camp in the state's Naxal-hit Dantewada district on August 28 allegedly without informing anyone, was found dead on Tuesday, a police official said.

Police suspect that the head constable, Kaneshwar Netam (32), might have entered Naxals' den in the forest and was killed by them.

This is the second such incident in two days in which state police officials suspect the role of Maoists.

India: Three members of family found murdered in ashram in UP

Hardoi (UP), Sep 1 (PTI) A couple and their son were killed by unidentified persons in an ashram in the Tadiyawa area here, police said on Tuesday.

Hira Das (55), his wife Meera (48) and son Netram (20), who were living in the ashram built on their land, were brutally hit with stones, they said, adding the incident took place Monday night.

Senior officials, including Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, inspected the spot and formed teams to crack the case, police said.

BSP supremo Mayawati said incidents like these were a matter of concern.

India: Special efforts needed to bring minorities into mainstream of development: Raj CM

Jaipur, Aug 31 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday said special efforts are needed to bring the minorities into the mainstream of development as it is necessary that people of all classes come together to win the fight against poverty.

He said India is a bouquet of people of different castes, religions and languages for which people have to work together to strengthen it.

The chief minister inaugurated eight buildings of Minority Affairs and Waqf Department in various districts of the state.

Indian economy contracts 23.9 pc in April-June quarter

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) The Indian economy contracted by 23.9 per cent in the April-June quarter of this fiscal amid the COVID-19 crisis, official data showed on Monday.

The gross domestic product (GDP) had expanded by 5.2 per cent in the corresponding April-June period of 2019-20, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
