India: UP minister Mohsin Raza tests COVID-19 positive

Lucknow, Aug 31 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Minister Mohsin Raza on Monday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and asked everyone who had come in contact with him in the last few days to quarantine themselves.

Raza, who is the Minister of State for Minority Welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj in Uttar Pradesh, said on the advice of doctors, he has quarantined himself at his residence.

"In the past, some staff attached to me had tested positive for COVID-19. After having symptoms of COVID-19, I underwent test on Monday. I have tested positive for COVID-19.

India: Girl raped by minor youth in UP's Mathura

Mathura (UP), Aug 31 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an adolescent in a village in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday.

The girl had stepped out of her house on Saturday to buy some groceries from a nearby shop when she was waylaid by the youth and raped in a lonely place, they said.

The youth is also from the same village.

An FIR has been lodged by the victim's father under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: We warned govt, but it ignored: Cong on sharp GDP fall

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) The Congress Monday attacked the government over a sharp decline in the GDP numbers and alleged the NDA dispensation ignored the party's warnings and took no preventive steps to cushion the fall.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the government ignored his warnings in this regard six months ago, while his party colleague and former finance minister P Chidambaram stated it will take many months before the economy turns the corner and registers positive growth.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death and said with it "an era has come to an end".

India: Five Naxal terrorists arrested in Jharkhand

Hazaribagh/ Chatra, Aug 31 (PTI) Five Naxals were arrested in two separate operations in Jharkhand, police said on Monday.

An ultra of the banned Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) was arrested from the Balumath area in Latehar district, they said.

Acting on a tip-off, Sahendra Yadav alias Narian, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh, was arrested when he was visiting his home in Barbahdih village of the district, a senior officer said.

There are 17 cases, including that of loot, kidnapping and extortion, registered against him, he said.

India: Delhi riots: HC grants bail to Pinjra Tod member

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to a member of Pinjra Tod, a women's collective, in a case related to the communal violence in northeast Delhi during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in February.

Justice Suresh Kumar Kait gave the relief to JNU student Devangana Kalita on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and a surety of the like amount.

The court directed that she shall not directly or indirectly influence witness or tamper with the evidence.

India: Allahabad HC quashes Kafeel Khan's detention under NSA

Allahabad, Sep 1 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday quashed the detention of Dr Kafeel Khan under the National Security Act and ordered his immediate release.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, passed the order on a petition filed by Khan's mother Nuzhat Parveen.

India: 2 more cops suspended over Dalit's death in UP

Raebraeli (UP), Sep 1 (PTI) Two more policemen have been suspended in connection with the death of a 19-year-old Dalit man allegedly in police custody in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli district, officials said on Tuesday.

Earlier, the SHO of Lalganj police station in the district was suspended on Monday, after the deceased's mother alleged police brutality led to his son's death on Sunday.

India: 12 cops found involved in power theft in Gujrat

Ahmedabad, Sep 1 (PTI) Twelve police personnel, including two assistant sub-inspectors, in Gujarat's Amreli district have been asked to vacate their official quarters after they were found to be allegedly involved in power theft, officials said.

In an order issued on Monday night, Amreli District Superintendent of Police Nirlipt Rai said despite being part of a disciplined force, these police personnel "indulged in a criminal and illegal act", and asked them to vacate their quarters in two days.

India: KMC takes steps to clean roads from garbage

Kanpur: In order to give a cleaner look of the city roads, the Nagar Nigam has come up with the idea of constructing ramps alongside the roads. It is from the ramp the garbage will be dropped into the RC Dustbin and afterwards the garbage compactor machine will take the garbage to the plant at Bhauti.
