Four Indian fishermen held by Lankan Navy

Nagapattinam(TN), Nov 10 (PTI) FourTamil Nadu fishermen werearrestedby the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday when they were allegedly fishing in the sea off Kodiakarai coast, a fishermen association here said.

The fishermenbelonging to Tarangambadi in this district were apprehended for allegedly entering the Lankan territorial waters.

Thefishermenventured into the sea on November 7 and were fishing about 20 knots southeast of Kodiakarai this morning when the Lankan naval personnelcame to the spot and arrestedthem, representatives of the association claimed.

India: NGT imposes ban on sale, use of firecrackers in NCR from Nov 9 to Nov 30

New Delhi, Nov 9 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday imposed a total ban on sale or use of all kinds of firecrackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) from the midnight of November 9 to the midnight of November 30.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel clarified that the direction will apply to all cities and towns in the country where the average of ambient air quality during November (as per available data of last year) fell under the 'poor' and above categories.

India: Former IAS officer Sasikanth Senthil to join Congress

Chennai, Nov 8 (PTI) Former IAS officer S Sasikanth Senthil, who had resigned from service last year alleging that democracy was being "compromised," on Sunday announced his decision to join the Congress party.

The 2009 Karnataka-cadre officer had quit the IAS last year and has since participated in many protests against the government, including the anti-NRC/CAA agitations.

He was the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district when he resigned in September 2019.

India: 22-yr-old student raped by relative in UP's Banda

Banda, Nov 8 (PTI) A 22-year-old undergraduate student was allegedly raped by one of her relatives at her home in Girwa police station area of the district, police said on Sunday.

Circle Officer Siyaram of Naraini Circle, under which Girwa police station falls, said the student was raped by her 25-year-old relative on Friday.

He said the accused used to visit the girl's house.

He visited her house on Friday and finding her sleeping, raped her, he added.

India: Out on bail, UP man rapes, kills 7-yr-old girl

Sant Kabir Nagar (UP), Nov 8 (PTI) A man was arrested here on Sunday in connection with the alleged abduction, rape and killing of a 7-year-old girl, police said.

Superintendent of Police Brijesh Singh said the girl had gone missing on November 4 and her body was recovered on Saturday. During post mortem, rape was confirmed, he said.

The arrested accused has confessed to his crime. He told police that on November 4 when he saw the girl all alone, he abducted her. The man then took her to a jungle, raped and then killed her, the police officer said.

India: Post-demonetisation, corruption increased: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Nov 8 (PTI) Taking a dig on four years of demonetisation, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said fake currency notes are still in circulation and corruption has increased.

In a Hindi tweet, Akhilesh Yadav said, "After four years of demonetisation, fake currency notes are still there. Corruption has increased. There is no 'hisaab' of black money. People have not got Rs 15 lakh in their accounts.

Delhi's air quality severe, relief unlikely soon

New Delhi, Nov 9 (PTI) The national capital's air quality remained severe for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, with calm wind speed exacerbating the effect of stubble burning.

V K Soni, the head of the India Meteorological Department's environment research centre, said a major improvement in Delhi-NCR's air quality was highly unlikely in the coming days.

Patna, Nov 9 (PTI) Bihar might be on the cusp of a major generational shift in politics as it braced for Tuesday's counting of votes for the assembly election, with most pollsters predicting a landslide for the five-party Grand Alliance led by the young RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.

Counting will be taken up at 55 centres across 38 districts where the outcome will decide the fate of the Nitish Kumar government that has helmed the state for a decade and half.
