India: TMC activist gunned down in Bengal

Kolkata, Nov 12 (PTI) A TMC activist was killed and two others injured when unidentified assailants opened fired on them at Andal in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

Dharamveer Nuniya died on the spot after being shot by two miscreants around 11 pm on Wednesday. Two of Nuniya's companions sustained injuries in the attack.

A search to apprehend the assailants was underway, the officer said.

India: FM announces new employment generation scheme

New Delhi, Nov 12 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday announced a new job creation scheme by giving subsidy to those establishments that make new hires.

The subsidy would be to cover for retirement fund contributions by employees as well as employers for two years, she said.

Employees contribution (12 per cent of wages) and employer's contribution (12 per cent of wages) totalling 24 per cent of wages would be given to establishments for two years, she said.

India: FM announces Rs 65,000-cr fertilizer subsidy for farmers

New Delhi, Nov 12 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday announced a Rs 65,000-crore fertilizer subsidy for farmers as part of her stimulus package to boost the economy.

She said Rs 65,000 crore is being provided to ensure adequate availability of fertilisers to farmers and to enable timely accessibility of fertilisers in the upcoming crop season.

She said an additional outlay of Rs 10,000 crore will be provided for PM Garib Kalyan Rozgar Yojana in the current financial year.

India: Ghatampur bypoll: surprising moments during counting

Kanpur: Some surprising things were seen at the counting of Ghatampur bye-election votes. The counting was done at Naveen Galla Mandi premises here. As many as 1554 votes were counted at none of the above (NOTA) that left far behind two candidates fighting independently. Counting was completed in a total of 36 rounds.

Despite leading in the initial two rounds the BSP candidate ended at third position. It remained a shocking experience for the contestant.

Lucknow, Nov 10 (PTI) The BJP retained six seats and the SP hung on to its Malhani constituency in the bypolls for seven assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, the 6:1 outcome indicating Tuesday that the ruling party continued its hold over the Populous state.

BJP candidate Sangeeta Chauhan won in Naugawan Sadat, Usha Sirohi in Bulandshahr, Prem Pal Dhangar in Tundla, Shrikant Katiyar in Bangarmau, Satya Prakash Mani Tripathi in Deoria and Upendra Nath Paswan in Ghatampur, according to the Election Commission.

India: If Nitish becomes Bihar CM, credit goes to Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Nov 11 (PTI) Praising RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for giving a "spirited fight" in the Bihar Assembly polls, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday needled the BJP saying that if Nitish Kumar retains the post of chief minister despite the JD(U) winning fewer seats, the credit should go to the Sena.

It said that the BJP had promised that Nitish Kumar would be the next chief minister of Bihar even if his party bags less number of seats.

India: BJP wins all 8 seats in Gujarat by-elections

Ahmedabad, Nov 10 (PTI) In a clean sweep, the ruling BJP on Tuesday won all the eight assembly seats in Gujarat where by-elections were held, dealing a blow to the opposition Congress which had bagged these constituencies in 2017.

The BJP's tally in the 182-member Assembly has now reached 111.

Voting for the eight seats was held on November 3 and counting of ballots was taken up on Tuesday.

The Congress, disappointed by the results, said they had expected voters will teach a lesson to party MLAs who resigned and switched sides.

India: VHP to raise funds for Ram temple

Jaipur, Nov 10 (PTI) The Vishva Hindu Parishad will raise money from across the country for the Ram temple being built in Ayodhya.

According to a release, the organisation will mobilise financial support through a door-to-door campaign in four lakh villages across the country.

VHP working president Alok Kumar held a discussion with Sarkaryavah Suresh Bhayyaji Joshi of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to decide the outline of the campaign on Tuesday.

India: Centre invites Punjab farmers bodies for talks on Nov 13

Chandigarh, Nov 10 (PTI) The Centre has invited Punjab farmer bodies protesting against its farm laws for talks on November 13 in Delhi.

An invite from the Secretary, Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, has been sent to farmers' organisations for talks with Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) president Balbir Singh Rajewal said farmers' organisations have received an invitation.
