India: 17-yr-old Dalit girl commits suicide in UP's Mahoba

Mahoba (UP), Nov 9 (PTI) A 17-year-old Dalit girl has allegedly hanged herself here, police said on Monday, with family members claiming that she was upset with a neighbour who used to stalk her.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, SHO of Mahobkanth, Dinesh Singh said, adding that the body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

The minor girl and her younger brother used to live with their grandparents here as their parents work as labourers in Delhi, the SHO said.

India: Vaiko urges PM to get TN boats seized by Sri Lanka released

Chennai, Nov 9 (PTI) MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps for release of over 100 impounded mechanised boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen from Sri Lanka or ensure compensation.

Citing news reports, he said a Sri Lankan court has ordered 121 boats seized from the fishermen to be 'destroyed', adding it was shocking.

Of the over 100 boats, as many as 88 were from Rameswaram, Vaiko, a Rajya Sabha MP, said in a letter to Modi.

Indian Overseas Bank seeks about Rs 1,000 cr capital support from govt

New Delhi, Nov 8 (PTI) Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has sought a capital support of about Rs 1,000 crore from the government in order to create buffer for any exigency, a top official of the bank said.

The state-owned lender, which has posted profit for the last three consecutive quarters, expects to continue the trend in the remaining part of the current fiscal year with increased focus on recovery and business pick up.

Harris, born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, both of whom immigrated to the United States to study, made history by becoming the first woman to win the second-highest U.S. office in the election.

India: Feel very happy over Kamala Harris' victory, says aunt

Chennai, Nov 8 (PTI) City-based maternal aunt of US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Dr Sarala Gopalan, is elated over her niece's feat and now hopes to attend her swearing-in ceremony.

The jubilant veteran doctor told PTI on Sunday that she couldn't speak to Harris on Saturday as she spent the entire day waiting for the announcement on her victory.

"How do you think I should feel about her victory. I feel very happy," a proud Gopalan, a senior consultant at the Voluntary Health Services here, said.

India: COVID-19 negative report must for Haj pilgrims next year

Mumbai, Nov 7 (PTI) Haj pilgrims will have to submit COVID-19 negative report 72 hours prior to their journey to Saudi Arabia in 2021, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Saturday.

After holding a meeting with the Haj Committee and other stake-holders, the minister for minority affairs told reporters that December 10 is the last date for submitting applications for Haj pilgrimage 2021.

India: 6-yr-old child found dead in UP's Pilibhit, rape suspected

Pilibhit (UP) Nov 7 (PTI) A six-year-old girl, who had gone missing a day ago, was found dead in a sugar cane field in her village in Pilibhit district on Saturday, police said.

The child had some strangulation marks on her neck and she is also suspected to be a rape victim, said Pilbhi Superintendent of Police Jaiprakash.

The SP, however, added that the body has been sent for the post mortem and the rape could be confirmed only after the autopsy report is available.

India: Woman Naxal terrorist with Rs 8 lakh reward killed in MP

Balaghat, Nov 7 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman Naxal, carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh on her head, was killed in an encounter with the police in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, an official said on Saturday.

The encounter took place at Malkhedi jungle under Baiher police station, some 90 km from the district headquarters on Friday night, Balaghat superintendent of police Abhishek Tiwari said.

India: 12-yr-old raped by father in UP's Pratapgarh

Pratapgarh (UP), Nov 7 (PTI) A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father in a village under Kandhai Police Station area here, a senior officer said.

Acting on the complaint of the daughter, police lodged a complaint under relevant sections including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the father has been arrested, Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said.

The girl has been sent for medical examination and investigations are on, the SP added.
