India: Haze chokes Delhi, pollution levels highest since November last year

New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) A layer of haze lingered over the national capital and its suburbs on Thursday morning, with raging farm fires and a fall in the wind speed and temperatures pushing air quality to the worst levels in around a year.

As the skies hung heavy and acrid over the region, people complained of itchy throat and watery eyes.

India: Jr engineer goes missing with EVM in UP

Bulandshahr (UP), Nov 4 (PTI) A junior engineer of the development authority here went missing with an electronic voting machine (EVM) during the bypoll held on the Sadar Assembly seat in the district, an official said on Wednesday.

The additional EVM was later seized by the police from the office of the junior engineer identified as Mahesh Agrawal and returned to the district administration, they said.

India: 7-yr jail term for UP man over harassment, suicide of girl

Bulandshahr (UP), Nov 4 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district sentenced a man on Wednesday to seven years of imprisonment in the case of suicide by a 17-year-old girl.

The district court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused who was harassing the student.

On August 2 last year, a resident of Khurja area had lodged complaint that Sushil, who lived in the neighbourhood, was harassing her daughter, who committed suicide. The accused was later arrested.

India: Arnab Goswami remanded to judicial custody till Nov 18

Alibaug (Maha), Nov 4 (PTI) Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of an interior designer, was remanded to judicial custody till Nov 18 by a court here.

The court gave the ruling late in the night.

Goswami has filed for bail and the court has asked the investigation officer to file reply, the journalist's lawyer Gaurav Parkar said.

In the Alibaug court, police had sought a 14-day remand of Goswami, he said.

India: Rally in city against Macron's comments

Kolkata, Nov 4 (PTI) Around 500 members of All Bengal Minority Youth Federation took out a rally in central Kolkata on Wednesday protesting against French President Emmanuel Macron for comments allegedly made by him about a teacher who was decapitated for showing caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

The demonstrations in the city's Esplanade area, which followed anti-France protests in Muslim countries and many parts of India last week, had placards which read 'Shame on Macron' and 'French promoting Islamphobia'.

India: Man gets 20-yr jail for raping girl in UP

Bulandshahr (UP), Nov 4 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district sentenced a man to 20 years in jail on Wednesday for raping a 5-year-old girl.

The additional district and sessions judge also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused.

Sanjeev had raped the girl in Agota area, following which he was arrested under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

India: Fire tender reaches late in Barra, loss reported

Kanpur: If a fire incident remains unattended by the fire tenders, the leaps of fire damage additionally. Such instance surfaced in the city's Barra area on Tuesday late night.

Despite immediate information to the nearby Fire station, the tenders reached the spot two hours late as was reported. It was also told that there was a big loss due to this fire in the medical shop.

A medical store at the World Bank Sector D caught fire fiercely. The owner tried to inform the Fire Station but the phone was not picked up in his initial attempts.

India: Elders looked excited in casting vote at Ghatampur

Kanpur: What has been seen in the bye poll of Ghatampur assembly seat was the enthusiasm of elder voters and the youths. Voting continued from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

One 92 years old voter was noticed in the queue to cast his vote at a polling booth in Ghatampur. He reacted that he arrived at the booth early because he believed in the voting first and then other work.

One 70 years old voter and another 69 years old lady voter also followed just the same message. 

India: Naxal terrorist killed in encounter with police in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 3 (PTI) A Naxal was killed in a gunfight with police in Chhattisgarhs Bijapur district on Tuesday, police said.

The encounter took place around 9:30 am in a forest near Kamalpur village under the Usoor police station area when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI.

Acting on inputs about the movement of ultras in the area, the DRG, a frontline anti-Naxal force of the state police, launched the operation in the wee hours, he said.
