India: Book distributed at Seva Dal camp targets Savarkar

Bhopal, Jan 2 (PTI) The Congress-affiliated Seva Dal on Thursday distributed a book on Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar, questioning his credentials as a patriot and his reputation for valour, drawing criticism from the BJP.

The Hindi book, distributed at an ongoing camp of the Seva Dal here, was titled "Veer Savarkar, Kitne 'Veer'?" (How brave was `Veer' Savarkar?).

The book alleged that Savarkar received money from the British after he was released from Andaman's Cellular Jail.

India: 1,000 medical college teachers in MP quit to press demands

Bhopal, Jan 2 (PTI) At least 1,000 teachers from six government medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh have resigned in the last 48 hours to press their demands including a "clear- cut promotion policy", their union said on Thursday.

The protest could hit services in hospitals attached to government-run medical colleges.

The protesting teachers would not be reporting for duty from January 9, said Dr Rakesh Malviya, secretary of the state unit of the Central Medical Teachers' Association.

Six Killed On New Year’s Eve As Elevator Crashes In India

NEW DELHI, Jan 1 (NNN-PTI) – At least six people were killed and several others injured, after an elevator at a private property crashed, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said today (Wednesday).

The accident took place in Patalpani-Mhow of Indore district, about 225 km west of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

The accident happened during a party, organised by a business family, at their farmhouse on New Year’s Eve.

India: Indore cleanest city for 4th time in a row

New Delhi, Dec 31 (PTI) Indore was adjudged India's cleanest city for the fourth time in a row in the central government's cleanliness survey announced on Tuesday.

Bhopal stood second in first quarter results (April to June), while Rajkot grabbed the second spot in second quarter results (July-September).

The third position was grabbed by Surat in the first quarter and Navi Mumbai in the second quarter.

India: Mayawati suspends BSP MLA for supporting CAA

Bhopal, Dec 29 (PTI) Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Sunday suspended party MLA Rama Bai for supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Mayawati has been strongly criticising the new law, which seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who came to India before December 31, 2014, to escape religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

India: MP anti-CAA violence: 2 senior Jabalpur cops transferred

Jabalpur (MP), Dec 27 (PTI) Two senior Jabalpur police officials were transferred by the Madhya Pradesh Home department in connection with the violence that took place there on December 20 during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests, officials said on Friday.

The state chief of a lesser-known political outfit was also booked for the violence, police said.

India: 15-year-old raped in bus, three arrested

Rajgarh, Dec 27 (PTI) A 19-year-old bus helper has been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl inside a bus in Biaora town of Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district, police said on Friday.

The police have arrested Raju Ahirwar for allegedly raping the minor, and two others, including the bus driver, for abetting the crime, an official said.

The incident occurred in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, when the victim was returning to her village after meeting her brother in Indore, Suthalia police station in-charge Mukesh Gaud said.

India: Video shows cops damaging vehicles in Jabalpur

Bhopal/Jabalpur, Dec 26 (PTI) A video purportedly showing policemen damaging parked vehicles in Jabalpur city of Madhya Pradesh, which witnessed violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), have surfaced on social media.

The Jabalpur Police said on Thursday that it would examine the authenticity of the video.

Incidents of police allegedly smashing up vehicles after violence during anti-CAA protests, supposedly to teach a lesson to the protesters, have been reported from other parts of the country.

India: MP CM to lead anti-CAA rally in Bhopal on Wednesday

Bhopal, Dec 24 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath will lead a protest march against the Citizenship Amendment Act in state capital Bhopal on Wednesday, Congress leaders said.

Called 'Samvidhan Bachao Nyaya Shanti Yatra', it will start at noon from Rangmahal Talkies and culminate at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Minto Hall (old Vidhan Sabha), MP Congress vice president and organisation in charge Chandra Prabhash Shekhar said.

India: Curfew after protest against CAA/NRC lifted in Jabalpur

Jabalpur, Dec 23 (PTI) Curfew imposed in some areas of Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city after violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was lifted on Monday, a police official said.

The decision was taken after a review of the situation in those areas, Superintendent of Police Amit Singh said.

Curfew was imposed on Friday in four police station areas of Jabalpur after protesters pelted stones, clashed with police and indulged in destruction of property.
