India: Facing trial in dowry case, woman ends life in jail

Indore, Apr 7 (PTI) A 55-year-old woman, being tried in a dowry case, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging herself in the district jail here in Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Anju Sen was found dead in the jails bathroom, where she hanged herself using a saree and another piece of cloth, said an official of the Sanyogitaganj police station.

India: ESMA invoked in Madhya Pradesh to tackle the corona

Bhopal, Apr 8 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday invoked the Essential Services Management Act (ESMA) with immediate effect to tackle the coronavirus spread, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

"In a bid to manage the COVID-19 outbreak in a better way and in the interest of the citizens, the government has implemented the Essential Services Management Act, called ESMA, with the immediate effect in Madhya Pradesh," Chouhan said in a tweet.

India: Journalist among six new COVID-19 patients in Bhopal

Bhopal, Apr 8 (PTI) Six more people tested positive for coronavirus in Bhopal, taking the number of such cases in the Madhya Pradesh capital to 91, officials said on Wednesday.

The six new patients include a journalist working with a news channel, a public relations department official said.

India: MP CM hints at extending lockdown period

Bhopal, Apr 7 (PTI) The ongoing lockdown, which is in place in view of coronavirus outbreak, might be extended in Madhya Pradesh if needed, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said here on Tuesday.

"We will take a decision after seeing the circumstances. Lives of people are more important. We can tolerate lockdown. We can resurrect the economy later on but can't be able to bring back lives of people," Chouhan said in a video statement.

India: Army man, three others held for robbery

Jabalpur, Mar 31 (PTI) Four persons, including an Army personnel and a minor, were arrested for allegedly robbing a man during the COVID-19 lockdown in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city, police said on Tuesday.

The Madhotal police arrested Army man Amit Raikwar, Sumit Raikwar (24), Rakesh Burman (21) and a 17-year-old boy, police station in-charge Anil Gupta said.

India: Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker resigns

Bhopal, Mar 24 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker N P Prajapati resigned late Monday night, hours after senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan took oath as chief minister of the state.

In his resignation letter submitted to Deputy Speaker Hina Kavre, Prajapati said he is resigning as speaker of the state Assembly on moral grounds.

India: After his BJP entry, forgery case against Scindia closed

Bhopal, Mar 24 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh Economic Offences Wing has closed a case against former Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and his family members, where they were accused of falsifying a property document while selling land, an official said on Tuesday.

Scindia quit the Congress on March 10 and later joined the BJP. His resignation from the Congress triggered a revolt in the Madhya Pradesh party unit, with 22 MLAs who belong to his camp also tendering their resignations. This led to collapse of the Kamal Nath-led state government last week.

India: Swearing-in of BJP ministry in Madhya Pradesh at 9 pm

Bhopal, Mar 23 (PTI) The oath-taking ceremony of the new BJP ministry in Madhya Pradesh will take place on Monday, official sources said.

The ceremony will be held at the Raj Bhawan at 9 pm, the sources told PTI.

The BJP legislature party meeting will be held around 7 pm to elect the legislature party leader.

Congress veteran Kamal Nath resigned as chief minister recently, paving the way for formation of the BJP-led government.
