Anti-CAA protests: Curfew imposed in parts of Jabalpur

Jabalpur (MP), Dec 21 (PTI) Curfew was imposed in Gohalpur and Hanumantal police station limits in Jabalpur city of Madhya Pradesh on Friday following violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Curfew was also imposed in some parts of Kotwali and Adhartal police station limits, District Collector Bharat Yadav told PTI.

All these areas are predominantly Muslim.

Schools would remain closed on Saturday as a precautionary measure, he said.

The situation was now under control, he added.

India: 'Over 10,000 cases of rape in MP in almost two years'

Bhopal, Dec 17 (PTI) More than 10,000 cases of rape have been reported in Madhya Pradesh between January 1, 2018 and November 20, 2019, the Legislative Assembly was told on Tuesday.

In a written reply, Home Minister Bala Bachchan stated that the total 10,279 cases of rape have been reported (to the police) in Madhya Pradesh between January 1, 2018 and November 20, 2019.

India: HC dismisses Pragya application on plea challenging her election

Jabalpur, Dec 13 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday dismissed BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur's application questioning maintainability of a petition challenging her election to the Lok Sabha from Bhopal.

The petition, filed by Bhopal-based journalist Rakesh Dixit, alleged the controversial Hindutva leader, during campaigning, delivered speeches on religious lines, thus violating election norms.

India: Girl raped by student at her school in MP

Jabalpur, Dec 13 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a student at a private school here, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred inside the toilet of the school on December 5, police said.

According to police, her parents lodged a complaint on December 12, after she told them about the incident and her medical examination confirmed that she had been raped.

India: Catholic priest arrested for forgery in MP

Bhopal, Dec 12 (PTI) A Catholic priest has been arrested and sent to 15-day judicial custody on the alleged charges of forgery and cheating, police said on Thursday.

Father Anand Muttungal, the former spokesman and public relation officer of Catholic Church of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested and produced in court on Wednesday, inspector Hari Om Dixit of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) said.

Muttungal has been sent to judicial custody till December 26, he added.

India: Protest held in Bhopal against citizenship bill

Bhopal, Dec 12 (PTI) Braving untimely drizzle, members of an organisation staged a protest here on Thursday evening against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) alleging it was unconstitutional and communal in nature.

The protesters, members of the Madhya Pradesh Democratic Rights Forum (MPDRF), burnt copies of the bill at Board Office square and chanted slogans against the legislation approved by Parliament.

Massive protests against the bill have rocked the north-eastern states.

India: Cong MLA wants MP govt to reject citizenship act, NRC

Bhopal,Dec 13 (PTI) Congress MLA Arif Masood has demanded that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath reject the amended Citizenship Act as well as proposed country-wide National Register of Citizens.

He would resign as legislator otherwise, said Masood, MLA from Bhopal Central constituency, while speaking to reporters on Thursday night.

Nath should emulate West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee who has said that the Citizenship Act and NRC would not be implemented in her state, he said.

India: Bungalow of human trafficking-accused bizman razed in MP

Indore, Dec 9 (PTI) A bungalow of runaway businessman Jitendra Soni, who is wanted on the charges of human trafficking and others, was demolished on Monday morning by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).

The 1500 sq ft bungalow in Shantikunj Colony was constructed on land earmarked for a public garden, officials said.

India: Elderly man gored to death by bull in MP

Jabalpur (MP), Dec 5 (PTI) A 70-year-old man was gored to death by a bull at a farm in Chattarpur village near here on Thursday, police said.

The deceased, Sudershan Patel, worked as a farm caretaker, they said.

"After placing fodder at the farm, Patel turned to go when the bull charged at him from behind and impaled him with horns. He suffered multiple grievous injuries in the attack and died on the spot," Barela Police Station in-charge, inspector Sushil Chouhan, said.

India: Man arrested for raping minor after fraudulently `marrying' her

Mandsaur (MP), Dec 3 (PTI) A man was arrested in Mandsaur town of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl after fraudulently marrying her, the police said.

Sonu Kumawat (24), the accused, and the girl knew each other for some time, a police official said.
