India: Three migrant workers on way to UP die on Maha-MP border

Barwani (MP), May 9 (PTI) Three migrant workers who were on their way to Utttar Pradesh from Maharashtra, mostly walking, died in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, officials said.

The trio were among thousands of migrant workers who have set out on foot for their home states from Maharashtra in the last few weeks amid lockdown on account for coronavirus.

While autopsy reports were yet to be available, doctors said the possible cause of deaths was fatigue and dehydration in peak summer heat.

India: Shops, vehicles to operate in Meghalaya from Monday

Shillong, May 10 (PTI) Apart from Shillong which currently has two active COVID-19 cases, the Meghalaya government has allowed shops to reopen and 50 per cent vehicles to ply across the state from Monday.

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, official sources said.

"The deputy commissioners and district transport officers have been asked to work out the modalities for regulating (public and private transport) on a rotation basis," Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.

India: African swine fever kills over 13,000 pigs in Assam

Guwahati, May 10 (PTI) The outbreak of African swine fever (AFS) has claimed more than 13,000 pigs in the last few days in parts of Assam, affecting the livelihood of hundreds of people involved in the animal husbandry in the state, an official said.

The infection has spread rapidly as the deaths have been reported from nine districts in Assam, he said.

India: Medium-intensity earthquake hits Delhi

New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) A medium-intensity earthquake of magnitude 3.4 hit Delhi on Sunday, a third in less than a month, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The epicentre of the quake was near Wazirpur in northeast Delhi, J L Gautam, Head (Operations) at the NCS, an institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

India: 572 Indians stranded abroad land in Mumbai, quarantined

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) Nearly 572 Indians who were stranded abroad due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown landed at the Mumbai international airport early Sunday morning, a Maharashtra government official said.

Of these, passengers belonging to Mumbai were kept under mandatory institutional quarantine in hotels near the airport, while those hailing from other cities were taken to their respective places where they will be kept in isolation in hotels taken over there for the purpose, the official said.

India: 75 pc COVID-19 cases in Delhi are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms: Kejriwal

New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said 75 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the city are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms.

The chief minister said the government has also issued an order for requisition of ambulances of private hospitals, adding that the decision has been taken in the wake of shortage of state-run ambulances.

"They (private ambulances) will have to be pressed into service when the government requires their service," Kejriwal said while addressing an online media briefing.

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) Three promoters of Ram Dev International, recently booked by the CBI for allegedly cheating a consortium of six banks to the tune of Rs 411 crore, have already fled the country before the State Bank of India reached the agency with the complaint, officials said on Saturday.

India: Some states unwilling to take back migrants: Maha minister

Mumbai, May 9 (PTI) Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat on Saturday expressed concern over the stand taken by several states to not take in migrant workers who were stranded in Maharashtra due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

In a statement, Thorat, who is also the state Congress president, alleged that arbitrary decisions taken by many states regarding migrant workers had worsened the situation.

India: Migrant worker found dead in quarantine centre

Berhampur (Odisha), May 8 (PTI) A 40-year-old migrant worker was on Friday found dead in a quarantine centre in Ganjam district where he was lodged after returning from Surat in Gujarat, a police official said.

The deceased was kept at the quarantine centre set up at Dhunkapada high school in Polasara block since Tuesday after he arrived from Surat in a train, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Rai said.
