Delhi govt to give Rs 5000 in aid to construction workers

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) The Delhi government decided on Monday to provide another financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to the construction workers in the wake of the extended coronavirus lockdown.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Construction Workers' Welfare Board, chaired by Labour Minister Gopal Rai. There are around 40,000 construction workers registered with the board.

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said many states were amending labour laws, but the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse to exploit workers, suppress their voice and crush their human rights.

Gandhi said there cannot be any compromise on the basic principles by allowing unsafe workplaces.

India: Model Poonam Pandey booked for violating lockdown norms

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) Model-cum-actress Poonam Pandey was on Sunday booked by Mumbai Police for violating the coronvirus-induced lockdown norms, an official said.

An FIR was registered against Panedy and a person accompanying her by the Marine Drive Police.

She was found roaming in her high-end car at Marine Drive without any reason, he said.

India: Former PM Manmohan Singh admitted to AIIMS

New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was admitted to the AIIMS here on Sunday evening after he complained of uneasiness, sources said.

Singh, 87, is under observation at the cardio-thoracic ward of the premier hospital, they said.

"All his parameters are fine. He is under observation at the AIIMS," a source close to him said, adding that he was taken to the hospital after he complained of "uneasiness".

India: 2 migrant workers killed, 7 injured as truck overturns in UP

Gorakhpur/Lucknow, May 11 (PTI) Returning home to Uttar Pradesh from Telangana, two migrant labourers were killed and seven others injured after a truck they had hitched a ride on to take a break from walking overturned in Gorakhpur district on Monday, police said.

In another incident, a migrant worker cycling back to his native place in Bihar from Delhi died after being run over by a car in Lucknow on Saturday, they said.

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) The death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 2,206 and the number of cases climbed to 67,152 in the country on Monday, registering an increase of 97 deaths and a record jump of 4,213 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 44,029. While 20,916 people have recovered, one patient has migrated, it said

"Thus, around 31.15 per cent patients have recovered so far," a senior health ministry official said

Indian Railways To Restart A Few Trains From Tomorrow Amid Lock-down

NEW DELHI, May 11 (NNN-PTI) – Indian Railways will start operating a few trains with effect from tomorrow (Tuesday), announced the Ministry of Railways on Sunday.

Booking for train tickets will begin online from Monday (this) evening, added the announcement.

This assumes significance as the country is witnessing lock-down till May 17, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far taken more than 2,100 human lives with total cases nearing 63,000.

India denies new road breaches territory disputed with Nepal

KANPUR: A heavy storm suddenly encircled the larger area with sand in the city's suburban Jajmau in the evening today. The speed of the storm was immense. The darkness filled all over the place. It was later followed by showers. However, the residents coped with the stormy situation.

India: Spotted deer crashes through Mumbai house roof

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) Residents of a house in Powai area here could not believe their eyes after a spotted deer crashed through the cement sheet roof into their house.

Forest officials said on Sunday the deer, possibly chased by a leopard, may have crashed into the house in the Hanuman Tekdi area in the process.
