Indian Army Chief to visit Ladakh to take stock of ground situation

New Delhi, June 23 (PTI) Army Chief Gen MM Naravane will visit Ladakh on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss with ground commanders the six-week standoff with Chinese military, Army sources said.

The Chief of the Army Staff will visit forward locations and interact with troops on the ground, they said.

The visit comes a week after 20 Indian Army personnel were killed in a brutal assault by the Chinese military in Galwan Valley which escalated the border tension.

India: Bailey bridge near India-China border in U'khand collapses

Pithoragarh, Jun 23 (PTI) A bailey bridge in this district of Uttarakhand, nearly 50 km from the Sino-India border, collapsed when a truck carrying a JCB machine was crossing it, an official said on Tuesday.

The truck driver and the JCB machine operator were injured as the 40-feet-long bridge, built in 2009, crashed on Monday under the combined weight of the truck and the JCB machine, SDM of Munsyari A K Shukla said.

The weight-bearing capacity of the bridge was 18 tonne while the combined weight of the JCB machine and the truck was 26 tonnes, he said.

India: Man gets 22-year jail term for raping minor in Jharkhand

Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Jun 22 (PTI) An East Singhbhum court on Monday sentenced a man to 22 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2019.

District and Additional Sessions Judge Ramakant Mishra convicted 21-year-old Sunny Lakra in the rape case and awarded the sentence under POCSO Act and sections 341 (wrongfully restraining any person), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 376 (rape) under the Indian Penal Code, Public Prosecutor Arun Kumar said.

India: 38-year-old woman raped in Court premises

New Delhi, June 22 (PTI) A 38-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a room of the Rouse Avenue Court here, police said on Monday.

The matter was reported on Monday and the accused has been arrested, they said.

In her statement, the woman has alleged that the accused, who is a court staff, raped her inside a room of the Rouse Avenue Court, a police official said.

CRPF jawan from Maharashtra killed in encounter in J&K

Mumbai, Jun 23 (PTI) The CRPF jawan killed in an encounter with militants in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday hailed from Solapur in Maharashtra and authorities were working to bring his mortal remains to his native place.

An official from Solapur confirmed that CRPF jawan Sunil Kale, a resident of Pangaon village in Barshi tehsil of the district, was killed in the encounter in Pulwama.

He joined the service in 2000 and was posted in Jammu and Kashmir since some time, the official said.

India: Hindu Sena activists deface Chinese embassy signboard

New Delhi, Jun 23 (PTI) Hindu Sena workers on Tuesday defaced a signboard outside the Chinese embassy here against the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in clashes with the Chinese troops in Ladakh's Galwan Valley last week.

"Today in protest against People's Republic of China's aggression on LAC, Hindu Sena activists pasted protest poster stating 'Cheen Gaddar Hai, Hindi Cheeni Bye Bye' (China is a traitor, India China Bye bye) on Chinese embassy's signboard, Hindu Sena president Vishnu Gupta said.

India: UP opposition leader tests positive for coronavirus

Ballia (UP ) June 23 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and Samajwadi Party leader, Ram Govind Chaudhary, has tested positive for coronavirus, an official said on Tuesday.

Chaudhary was suffering from fever and cold and was admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow on Monday where his sample was taken for testing, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Anand Prakash Joshi, said.

After the test report showed that he had contracted the virus, he was admitted to the SGPGI in Lucknow, the OSD added.

India, China commanders meet after border clash amid calls for boycott of Chinese goods

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian and Chinese military commanders met on Monday to try to ease tensions at their disputed Himalayan border as the public mood hardened in India for a military and economic riposte following the worst clash in more than five decades.

Major Indian traders called for a boycott of Chinese goods and the state of Maharashtra, home to India’s financial capital of Mumbai, put three initial investment proposals from Chinese companies worth 50 billion rupees ($658 million) on hold, just days after signing the agreements.

Indian and Chinese military agree to disengage in disputed Himalayan border

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian and Chinese military commanders have agreed to disengage troops from a heavily disputed stretch of their border where a clash last week left 20 Indian soldiers dead, an Indian government source said on Tuesday.

Senior military officials from both sides met for several hours on Monday in an attempt to reduce tensions in the Ladakh region in the western Himalayas.

“Modalities for disengagement from all friction areas in Eastern Ladakh were discussed and will be taken forward by both the sides,” the source said.

Water rains at KDA Colony locality in Kanpur's Jajmau area

KANPUR: Strangely enough, there were rains in the afternoon on one area of Jajmau while another area remained completely dry today.

When the residents of the Nai Chungi area were apprised of the rains occurring at KDA Colony locality, they looked surprised at this very authentic information. One lady learnt of rains on mobile and she could not believe at it. "How would this be possible?" She thought to herself.
