India: Akhilesh alleges UP govt hiding actual Covid death toll

Lucknow, Jun 22 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding the actual number of deaths due to COVID-19.

Through this, he said, the BJP government is actually hiding its face.

Yadav's remarks came a day after a report claimed that the death toll due to COVID-19 in 24 districts of Uttar Pradesh from July 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 was up to 43 times higher than the official figures.

India: Five injured as bus overturns at Kisan Nagar in Sachendi

Kanpur: There is no end to a road accident in the district. Recently, as many as 18 bus passengers were died after a collision with a loader in Sachendi. Now, a bus in a bid to overtake a truck was overturned at Kisan Nagar in Sachendi on Monday night.

Sitting on the bus 32 passengers started shrieking. On information of the people, the police admitted the injured bus passengers at the hospital. Seriously injured five passengers were taken to Hallet.

India: Rahul Gandhi releases white paper on Covid management

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday released a "white paper" by the party on the Centre's Covid management and urged the government to prepare for the third wave of coronavirus.

Releasing the "white paper", the former Congress chief said it is clear that the management of the first and second wave of COVID-19 was "disastrous".

India: Pawar working to unite Opposition: NCP

Mumbai, Jun 21 (PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar is working to unite all opposition leaders, party spokesperson Nawab Malik said while commenting on a meeting of Pawar with political strategist Prashant Kishor in New Delhi on Monday.

The meeting at Pawar's Delhi residence was held ahead of the NCP's national executive meet scheduled on Tuesday.

When asked about it, Malik said, "Pawar is working to unite all opposition leaders. May be, the meeting was to discuss it. The party's national executive meeting is also taking place in the national capital tomorrow."

India: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor meets Sharad Pawar

New Delhi, Jun 21 (PTI) Poll strategist Prashant Kishor on Monday met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar here, their second meeting this month amid heightened speculation about the possible formation of a Third Front to take on the BJP.

The closed-door discussions between Kishor and Pawar at the latter's residence lasted for about one-and-a-half hours, sources said.

The meeting comes a day before the NCP's general body meeting scheduled to be held at Pawar's residence.

India: Prisoner found dead in UP's Muzaffarnagar jail

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 21 (PTI) An undertrial prisoner lodged in the district jail here was found hanging in his barracks on Monday, police said.

Shahid, who was arrested last year in a case, is suspected to have died by suicide early morning, Jailor Kamlesh Singh told PTI.

The jailor said the body has been sent for a post-mortem and an investigation is on.

India: SC reserves verdict on Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia compensation to kin of COVID-19 deceased

New Delhi, Jun 21 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday reserved verdict on the pleas seeking directions that ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh be paid to the families of those who have died of COVID-19.

A special vacation bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and M R Shah heard Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate S B Upadhyay and other lawyers for almost two hours.

India: IUML hits out at proposed two-child norm of Assam govt

Guwahati, Jun 20 (PTI) The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Sunday condemned the Assam government's proposed population policy and termed it "anti-secular and unconstitutional".

The party also hit out at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for advocating a two-child norm for availing benefits under specific state government schemes and exempting certain communities from it.

India: Lakshadweep filmmaker Sulthana quizzed by Kavaratti police

Kochi, Jun 20 (PTI) Filmmaker Ayesha Sulthana, booked for sedition in Lakshadweep, on Sunday appeared before the Kavaratti police in connection with the case.

She reached the Kavaratti police headquarters at 4 PM and was allowed to leave at 7.15 PM after questioning.

In a video message to reporters, Sulthana said the police were cooperative and she had been directed to stay on the islands for 3-4 days.
