India: UP govt extends ban on strikes in state depts for six months

Lucknow, May 27 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in the state, banning strikes in public services, corporations and local authorities under it, for a period of six months, an official spokesperson said on Thursday.

A notification to this effect was issued on Tuesday, he added.

The Act gives police the powers to arrest, without a warrant, anybody for violating its provisions.

India: IMA serves defamation notice on Ramdev disparaging remarks against allopathy and doctors

Dehradun, May 26 (PTI) The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has served a defamation notice on Ramdev for alleged disparaging remarks against allopathy and allopathic doctors, demanding an apology from him within 15 days, failing which it said it will demand a compensation of Rs 1,000 crore from the yoga guru.

India: 2 newly elected village heads in UP take oath inside jail

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 26 (PTI) Two newly elected village heads, who were recently jailed for violating prohibitory orders, have taken oath inside Muzaffarnagar district jail here, officials said on Wednesday.

They took the oath through CCTV camera on Tuesday in the presence of prison officials and panchayat members, Jailor Kamlesh Singh told PTI.

Meanwhile, Mandwada village head Faiz Mohammad was arrested for violating prohibitory orders and creating violence when he and his supporters took out a procession in the village on Tuesday, police said.

India: NN takes stock of slackness in drains' cleaning

Kanpur: Negligence in cleaning drains is not a very bizarre thing. Some drains are being cleared by the Nagar Nigam itself. Silts are cleaned up by the machines while safai workers are also engaged in manual cleaning.

It will be worthwhile to mention here that the cleaning will continue up to the last day of the ongoing month. In absence of the completion of the work, the contractors were served with the notices. A warning to blacklist them has also been issued. 

India: Ayodhya mosque building plan submitted for approval

Ayodhya, May 24 (PTI) The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation has submitted to the Ayodhya Development Authority the building plan of the mosque, for which the Supreme Court had allotted five acres in the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi land dispute case.

The mosque for which the building plan was submitted for approval will be constructed at Ayodhya's Dhannipur village.

India: Bodies of woman, 2 daughters found in Rohini river in UP's Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur (UP), May 25 (PTI) The bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her two daughters were found floating in the Rohini river here, police said on Tuesday.

The girls were tied to their mother's saree and the three didn't have any injury marks on their bodies, they said, adding it was a suspected case of suicide.

The bodies of Maya and her daughters, Shivani (13) and Arpita (9), were found floating in the river in Jangal Kaudia locality of the Pipiganj area on Monday morning.

India: Jr docs stopped from meeting CM Adityanath in Jhansi

Jhansi, May 23 (PTI) Some junior doctors of a college were stopped from meeting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a review meeting here on Sunday, with senior officials saying this was done to ensure there was no disruption during the meet.

The doctors were from the Jhansi Medical College and they wanted to submit to the chief minister a memorandum which included that the institute's central library be kept open for 24 hours, sources said.

India: Hospital sealed in UP, was run by unqualified staff

Muzaffarnagar, May 22 (PTI) The district authorities sealed a private hospital here after finding that it was being run by unqualified staff, an official said on Saturday.

City Magistrate Abhishek Singh said the Apollo Nursing Home staff here failed to produce any document to show the required qualification.

He said the owner of the hospital too lacked qualification to treat people. The authorities have ordered a probe into it, he said.

India: SP leader Azam Khan's condition stable

Lucknow, May 22 (PTI) The condition of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan is stable, the hospital treating him said in a statement here on Saturday.

Khan and his son Abdullah were shifted from the Sitapur jail to Medanta Hospital here on May 9 for coronavirus treatment.

"On May 22, SP MP Azam Khan (72) was given two litres of oxygen. His condition is stable," the hospital said.

The condition of his 30-year-old son too is stable and he has been kept under the observation of doctors, the statement said.
