India: Govt must be held accountable for 'failing' its people, says Akhilesh after bodies found floating in Ganga

Lucknow, May 13 (PTI) After a number of bodies were seen floating in the Ganga in the past few days, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh must be held accountable for "failing" its people badly.

According to Ballia residents, at least 52 bodies were seen floating at the Ujiyar, Kulhadia and Bharauli ghats in the Narahi area.

However, the district authorities did not tell the exact number of bodies found there.

India: People rush as liquor stores reopen in UP during Covid pandemic

Noida (UP), May 11 (PTI) Liquor stores reopened in Gautam Buddh Nagar on Tuesday after remaining closed for days due to the coronavirus curfew in Uttar Pradesh, officials said, with tipplers thronging shops in large numbers with scant regard for COVID-19-appropriate behaviour.

District Excise Officer Rakesh Bahadur Singh said liquor stores have been permitted to open for sale of alcohol, including foreign and country-made liquor, but in compliance with COVID-19 protocols such as maintaining of social distancing and wearing of face cover.

India: One more doctor dies from COVID at AMU medical college

Aligarh (UP), May 11 (PTI) Another senior doctor at AMU's medical college died from coronavirus on Tuesday, taking the number of deaths from COVID and COVID-like symptoms among serving and retired faculty members of the university to at least 35, an official said.

Prof Shoaib Zaheer (56) is the second senior faculty member from the Department of Medicine at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), who has died from the infection.

India: Human bodies floating in Ganga river in UP, Covid patients suspected

Ballia/Ghazipur (UP), May 11 (PTI) Bodies were seen floating in the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia and Ghazipur districts, according to local residents and the authorities on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, at least 71 bodies were fished out from the Ganga in Bihar's Buxar, which is downstream the two UP districts, triggering suspicion that these could be of COVID-19 patients.

India: HCL to provide 21 oxygen plants to Delhi govt

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) Tech firm Hindustan Computers Ltd (HCL) on Tuesday said it is supporting the Delhi government with 12,000 oxygen cylinders and 21 oxygen plants.

In a statement, HCL said each cylinder has a capacity of 40 litres oxygen whereas 21 oxygen plants will generate 8,800 litres of oxygen per minute.

Two of these ready-to-use oxygen plants which were imported from France have already been delivered and will get installed at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in the national capital, it added.

India: UP govt fudging COVID data claims Opposition parties

Lucknow, May 9 (PTI) Opposition Congress and Samajwadi Party on Sunday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of making false claims about controlling the COVID-19 situation in the state and "manipulating data".

They alleged that the administrative machinery and health services in the state are "completely paralysed" and the pandemic is spreading fast in villages as migrants returning home are not being tested.

India: Corona curfew extended in Uttar Pradesh till May 17

Lucknow, May 9 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday extended till May 17 the curfew imposed in the state to curb the spread of coronavirus, a senior official said.

The curfew, which was earlier scheduled to end on 7 am on Monday, has been extended.

The corona curfew imposed in the state has been extended till May 17, Additional Chief Secretary (Information), Navneet Sehgal, said in a statement issued here.

India: Lion at UP Safari Park tests COVID positive

Bareilly (UP), May 7 (PTI) A lion at the Etawah Safari Park has tested positive for COVID-19 and another was suspected to have caught the infection, days after eight Asiatic lions in Hyderabad were found infected with the virus.

"Sixteen samples of 14 Asiatic lions at the Etawah Safari Park had been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) for RT-PCR tests for COVID-19. On Thursday, one lion tested positive for the virus, while another was considered as a suspected case. The remaining 12 lions have tested negative," IVRI Joint Director Dr KP Singh said.

India: Sanskrit scholar at AMU Prof Khalid Bin Yusuf dies

Aligarh (UP), May 6 (PTI) Noted Sanskrit scholar at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Prof Khalid Bin Yusuf has passed away after a brief illness, a university statement said here on Thursday.

Prof Yusuf (60) was showing COVID-19 symptoms and had acute pneumonia, his family members said.

He passed away on Wednesday night while being treated at a hospital, they added.

Prof Yusuf was the first Muslim in India to earn a doctorate on Rigveda, as per the statement.
