India: Aligarh hooch tragedy death toll rises to 25

Aligarh (UP), May 30 (PTI) The death toll in the Aligarh hooch tragedy climbed to 25 on Sunday while police seized 243 pouches of illicit liquor from a block along the district's border with Haryana, officials here said.

BJP Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam, however, said according to information gathered by him, the death toll has crossed 35.

Speaking to reporters, Gautam said his figures are based on inputs collected by him from different villages "where many victims have been cremated without conducting a post-mortem examination".

India: Two timber shops gutted into fire at Bansmandi

Kanpur: Two timbers shops were gutted into the fire due to an electric short circuit in Bansmandi locality here on Sunday morning. 

The leaps of fire caused a commotion as people came out of their houses. 

On the phone call, the police force from two stations viz Raipurwa and Anwarganj reached on the spot. 

Immediately two fire tenders from Latouche Road fire station arrived. It took one and half an hour to douse the fire.

Although the loss in lakhs was reported yet the police told the estimation was in progress.

India: Tutor held on charge of raping pupil in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 30 (PTI) A tutor has been arrested in this district for allegedly raping his student and recording the act to blackmail her, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in an area under Kotwali police station limits and the accused was arrested on Saturday, they said.

According to the FIR, the tutor used the video to blackmail the 18-year-old student. He threatened her that he will circulate the video if she rejected his advances, police said.

India: UP govt following dictatorship: Priyanka Gandhi

Lucknow, May 28 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of pursuing dictatorship after the Essential Services Maintenance Act was extended for the third time in the state.

She said the Yogi government is following policies aimed at suppressing democratic rights of employees.

India: Donations for Ayodhya mosque made tax-free

Ayodhya, May 28 (PTI) The government has granted tax exemption to those contributing for the construction of the mosque, for which the Supreme Court had allotted five acres in the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi land dispute case, according to members of the trust overseeing the project.

The decision came nine months after the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF), the trust overseeing the project, applied for it first.

India: Farmers protest at Jewar toll plaza on Yamuna Expressway

Noida (UP), May 28 (PTI) A group of farmers protesting against the central farm laws on Friday staged a demonstration at the Jewar toll plaza here, partially disrupting traffic movement on the Yamuna Expressway, according to officials.

The farmers belonging to the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) had reached Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar on Thursday with an objective to stage the demonstration as part of their plan to carry out similar protests at some other toll plazas in western Uttar Pradesh.

India: Minor raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, May 28 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour here, police said on Friday.

The incident that took place on Thursday evening was reported at Bhopa Police Station.

The accused was identified as Nasir, who took the girl to his house saying his sister-in-law had asked to meet her.

According to the complaint filed by victim's father, the accused threatened the girl and raped her while his friend Fateh Khan stood outside the gate.

India: UP BJP MLA backs Ramdev over comments on allopathy

Ballia (UP), May 28 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Surendra Singh has joined the row between Ramdev and the doctors' fraternity, saying the comments against the yoga guru are condemnable.

The Bairia MLA took to Facebook on Thursday to back Ramdev for his remarks against allopathy, and termed him a flag bearer of the Indian medicine system.

India: Booksellers increase order on UP Board's expected results

Kanpur: Booksellers have an eye on their profits, that's why they are ordering textbooks for class XI in bulk. Since they have come to know that pass marks to every student appearing in class X is nearly certain they have initiated this step.

It has been learnt that all the books prescribed by UP Board will be received by them by July, 2021. They guess whatever situations are persisting at the time it looks there will be systematic classes in July. By then a whole lot of books will be despatched by that time.

India: 3 arrested for gang-raping young woman in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 27 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman was gang-raped by three men in a village here, police said on Thursday, adding that the culprits have been arrested.

On Wednesday, Shubham, Noni and Sorabh abducted the woman and gang-raped her in a field under Khatauli police station area, they said.

According to the complaint filed by the victim's family, the culprits also threatened the woman with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
